Chapter Forty-Two: I'm Winning
*~*~*~*
A groan escaped me as the alarm clock went off, blaring throughout Cristina's bedroom. I buried my face deeper into the pillow as I felt Cristina and Meredith jolt upright at the beeping sound.
"Crap, Mer!" Cristina swore as Meredith turned off the alarm. I wiped the sleep from my eyes with the back of my hand as I sat up, leaning against the headboard as Cristina scrambled for her phone. "Oh, my God! The phone! Oh! Mer!"
"I'm sorry!" Meredith apologized after accidentally hitting Cristina in the face.
"Maybe we should've gotten up earlier for coffee," I though aloud.
"Not helping Beth," Meredith warned me as she handed Cristina her cell phone.
"Did we remember to--" Cristina began.
"No, no, it's-- it's-- it's charged," Meredith assured our friend.
"Oh, God!" Cristina groaned as she flopped back down onto the mattress between Meredith and I.
"It's-- It's charged, and the ringer's on." Meredith promised her. "Okay, hold on. You got to put on some lipstick. Here."
"You do know this is just a phone call, not a Skye session or FaceTime, right?" I raised a brow at the blonde as she shoved the lipstick into Cristina's hands.
"Someone's not a morning person," Cristina muttered as she put the lipstick on, not bothering to argue with Meredith.
"Sorry if I'm not thrilled to wake up at five in the morning my one night away from home," I rolled my eyes. "You try being woken up ten times a night by a crying baby."
"What's wrong with Mark?" Cristina asked.
"I think she was talking about Melinda," Meredith rolled her eyes. "What's wrong with her?"
"Bad ear infection," I said.
"What if--" Cristina began.
"No," Meredith cut her off while I shook my head. "No, it's not possible, because Catherine Avery said that you were on the short list, and your project is-- it's innovative. It's gonna lead to the actual printing of hearts. Millions will be saved."
"What time is it?" Cristina asked.
"Five o one," I glanced at my own phone.
"Did they?" Alex sucked his head in the room.
"Not yet," Meredith shook her head.
"Did they?" Wilson asked as she ran to stand in the doorway.
"No," Alex told her as they came in to sit at the end of the bed.
"Okay, listen, if there are five nominees, it's alphabetical," I pointed out. "Yang is last."
"Oh, geez, hairball!" Cristina yelled when Wilson's phone started to ring instead of her own.
"Oh, sorry! It's Shane." Wilson apologized as she answered the call. "Hey. No. Uh, not yet, but it's still early. It's, uh..."
"Five o two," Cristina sighed as we all stared at where her phone was laying on the bed in front of her. "Mer, seriously, what if they don't call?"
Before any of us could figure out what to say to her her phone started to ring. Screams escaped all of us girls while Alex plugged his ears with his fingers, wincing at the sound.
