Chapter Thirty-Nine: Somebody That I Used to Know
*~*~*~*
I found myself standing with Derek, Jackson, and Mark in a crowded conference room as we all waited for Meredith's presentation to start. She had been granted a 3-D printer for the hospital and was now unveiling it to everyone, as well as something she'd created with it.
"What'd she print?" I asked Derek, interested as to what my blonde friend was so excited about. "A gallbladder?"
"You'll just have to wait and see for yourself." Derek shook his head, refusing to answer my question.
"You don't know either," Mark accused him. "You're just as clueless as the rest of us, aren't you?"
"Can you just shut up?" Derek frowned at my husband. "Just for once?"
"You know, if it's a kidney then she's about three and a half months late." I commented, only earning an eye roll from Jackson in response.
"You really need to come up with some new jokes," he took a sip of his coffee. "That was just sad."
"Good morning, everyone." Owen got everyone's attention as he stood at the front of the room with Meredith and and the technician. "Grey Memorial has always valued innovation as a top priority. And today, the leader of this charge is Dr. Grey. We should all follow her in pushing the boundaries, moving medicine forward, finding new ways to innovate. Dr. Grey?"
"3-D printing will allow us to customize treatment for each individual's specific needs," Meredith took over. "Instead of ordering and waiting for an implant we are going to be able to print in-house, on-demand right here. Eventually, even using a patient's own cells to prevent rejection. Welcome to the age of personalized medicine."
"Wow," I had to bite my tongue to keep myself from laughing as Meredith pulled a fork out of the printer instead of an organ like we'd all been expecting from her excitement. At the sight of the cutlery a lot of people started to clear out of the room, disappointed.
"Well, at least it isn't a spork." I heard someone say as Derek tried to start a round of applause, but no one joined him.
"You guys, we just got the printer yesterday." Meredith reminded all of us, clearly upset with our reaction. "We're testing it out. Forks today... Tomorrow, portal veins for actual people. You guys!"
"Do we clap?" I glanced at Mark, unsure of what to do.
"That'd just be pity clapping," Mark shook his head.

"Did you hear Mer just revolutionized the world of cutlery?" Alex asked Cristina as she joined him, Meredith, and I on the elevator later that morning. I snorted at his joke, evening the fork that Meredith was still proudly carrying around.
"No, I... did not." Cristina shook her head as she looked between the three of us.
"Working on a liver model." Meredith explained to our curly haired friend. "It's-- It's printing up now."
"That's great," Cristina nodded.
"It is great." Meredith agreed. I frowned as I looked between the two of them, raising a brow at Alex in silent confusion. When the elevator doors opened on Cristina's floor she didn't say a word to any of us before leaving.
