Chapter Thirty: The Face of Change

*~*~*~*

"Can someone tell me what the hell a 'brand ambassador' is?" I asked as soon as I walked into the attending's lounge. Glancing between my phone and Alex, Jackson, and Cristina as they all finished getting ready for our shift. "Mark just texted me, said he has a couple goons following him around?"

"It's for Cahill's rebranding thing." Cristina shrugged before turning her attention back to Alex. "So when are you just going to get it over with and sleep with the intern?"

"For the millionth time, Jo and I are not into each other." Alex rolled his eyes at the idea.

"Oh, please." Cristina scoffed, her mouth full of donut. "You and Ponytail-McGee were canines in heat last night. Literally."

"Told you they were doing it, Avery." Meredith said as she came in, taking a seat next to me on the couch. "Pay up."

"I'm serious." Alex insisted. "We're just friends."

"You're incapable of just being friends with a girl." I disagreed.

"I'm friends with you three, and April." He reminded us.

"You hit on Meredith during our first shift. You hit on Cristina after seeing her in her underwear intern year. After the merger you tried to pressure April into sleeping with you. And I can't tell you how many times you've hit on me." I listed off for him.

"She's right." Cristina agreed. "You two are, like, one drink away from crazy monkey sex. Just stuff her turkey. You'll feel better."

"I feel fine. Look, I'm not screwing my ex every night and I'm not taking advantage of interns on some else's sofa." Alex looked between Cristina and Jackson as April stopped in the doorway, her eyes going wide at our conversation. "You're gonna pay to have that thing disinfected."

"I'm not taking advantage." Jackson shook his head. "It's a really nice sofa, though."

"Hey, Apes." Cristina greeted the redhead, seeming to notice her for the first time.

"Hey, here's a question." April cleared her throat, gaining all of our attention. "Um, what ever happened to good old-fashioned romance? No stuffing of turkeys or disinfecting sofas, but, you know, what about nice normal dates where people talk, share a meal, get to know each other, and then wind up together, not because they're monkeys, but because they have genuine feelings in a committed way. I mean, what's so wrong with that, huh?"

"Are you gonna eat all of those?" Meredith eyed the three burritos in April's hands. April only shook her head before leaving again.

"You broke her." I sent Jackson a pointed look.

"Every time I touch this thing, it deletes another patient." Meredith complained as she tried to use one of the new tablets we'd been given. It was just one of the many tools Cahill was implementing into the hospital to try and speed up our process.

"It deletes patients?" Cristina frowned.

"I did the exact same thing this morning. Here. Let me see something." Wilson took the tablet as she joined us with Alex, Edwards, and Jackson, two photographers trailing behind the group.

"Who are your stalkers?" Meredith eyed the photographers.

"Oh, uh, the new guys are looking for a hospital show pony," Alex shrugged. "A face for the brochure."
