Chapter Forty-Three: Everything I Try to Do, Nothing Seems to Turn Out Right

"Try these," Meredith handed Cristina and I a tupperware container with waffles and berries in it.

"Did you make it?" I asked, remembering the incident with her eggs during our residency.

"No, Amelia did," she shook her head. At the mention of Derek's sister I smiled, eagerly taking one out to try. With Derek in D.C. working on his trial Amelia had been staying in town to help Meredith with the kids and cover his service at the hospital.

"Oh, my God," I groaned after taking the first bite. "Can you just have Derek stay in D.C. so we can keep her? These are amazing!"

"I know," she grinned.

"Hey," Owen greeted us before looking at Cristina. "The, uh, first candidate's here and waiting in the conference room."

"I'm on my way now," Cristina assured him.

"So, I still can't believe he's making you pick your replacement," Meredith commented once Owen was gone. I nodded in agreement, still finding it hard to believe that Cristina was leaving Seattle soon to take over Burke's practice in Zurich.

"I'm interviewing Dr. Russell's replacement, not mine," Cristina corrected her. "Which I volunteered to do, by the way."

"Please," I scoffed. "We all know you were the one leading cardio, not Russell."

"It's a punishment," Meredith shook her head. "It's like making you clean the apartment you're vacating."

"No, Owen knows this is the right move for me," Cristina assured us. "He's been nothing but supportive."

"Something's coming," Meredith insisted. "I can feel it in my bones."

"Ew," I frowned when we stopped across the hall from the room the candidate was waiting in. Through the window we could see and man with graying hair sitting at the table, dressed in a suit with a bored expression on his face.

"I hate his face," Cristina said.

"Okay, now look me in the eye and tell me this isn't a punishment," Meredith raised a brow at our curly haired friend.

"Thank you for this waffle," Cristina thanked her before walking away, taking the rest of the waffles with her.

"Hey," I frowned as she snatched the last bit of the one from my hand as she went. A sigh escaped me as I looked back at the candidate through the window and I pressed my lips into a thin line. "He's punishing her."

"Yeah," Meredith nodded in agreement.

"All right, Dr. Ross," I cleared my throat as he, Arizona, and I checked up on one of the baby's in the NICU. "Tell us what's so special about little Jacob here."

"Jacob has an omphalocele," Ross said. "He was born with his abdominal organs outside of his body. We've been managing him with daily application of silver-sulfadiazine ointment as a bridge to delayed closure."

"And that's your job," I nodded in approval.

"And to keep an eye on the other tiny humans," Arizona added, gesturing around the room as she did so. "It should be a quiet and adorable day."
