Chapter Twenty-Three: Migration

*~*~*~*

"Kepner's wasted. That's a first." Alex commented as he, Jackson, and I stood in Meredith's crowded living room, watching Meredith, Cristina, and April all drunkenly dance on the couch. Meredith had decided to throw a party to celebrate passing the boards.

"Yeah, well, she's all about firsts now." Jackson sighed.

"Why did I even agree to come to this?" I asked. "Parties aren't much fun when you're sober."

"Wait. Wait. Music!" April yelled as the phone rang. The music was quickly shut off as Cristina grabbed her cellphone and answered it.

"This is Dr. Yang." Cristina answered her phone. "Well, that does certainly give me a lot to think about. Thank you so much for calling. Mayo wants to give me a research lab. Guess who's back in the running!"

"Whoo! Yeah, Cristina!" April cheered along with everyone else as Meredith turned the music back up.

"So that's what rock bottom looks like." Alex took a pull of his beer.

"Music. Music." Jackson yelled as a phone started to ring. Once again, Meredith turned down the music. I watched April rush towards her phone to answer it.

"Hello." She panted as she answered. "Uh, yes, this is she. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Okay. Well, yes, thank you. Thank you. Um, thank you so much for the opportunity." We all watched as the redhead hung up. "UVA wants a board-certified surgeon so they pulled my offer. Come on. Music. Come on. Music! Come on!"

"Yeah, I'm calling Mark." I nodded, heading towards the kitchen. This was just getting sad, I couldn't stay here any longer.

"I made a decision." Meredith declared as she joined Cristina and I in the hall the next day.

"Oh, you have?" I asked.

"Cristina, you're going to Stanford." Meredith nodded.

"Oh, you've made my decision." Cristina frowned.

"There's no way you've going to Columbia." Meredith continued. "And Mayo's in Minnesota. Please. And since we're staying here, Stanford's only a couple of hours away. You'll come up. Beth and I'll bring the kids down. We can all get drunk on the weekends. Okay, well, maybe we shouldn't bring the kids."

"Hey! There you are." Teddy grinned when she spotted Cristina. "Is there anything you want to go over on the conjoined twins before you head out to Boise?"

"Uh, no. I'm, uh, I'm good." Cristina shook her head.

"You sure?" Teddy pressed. "'Cause you're gonna be the sole cardiothoracic surgeon representing Seattle Grace. Which, I mean, you know, is kind of unheard of for an attending to allow her fellow to do. But that's just the kind of faith I have in you."

"Technically, I'm not a fellow yet." Cristina pointed out.

"I know. Right?" Teddy grinned. "I mean, so just think about all the things that you're gonna be able to do when you are. Tip of the iceberg, Yang. I'm proud of you."

"That was kind of sad." I commented once Teddy had left us alone again.

"You haven't even told her you're leaving?" Meredith asked.

"I haven't decided yet where I'm going." Cristina shook her head.

"You just did." Meredith disagreed. "Stanford."
