Chapter Twenty: The Lion Sleeps Tonight

*~*~*~*

"Dr. Webber." Jackson greeted Webber as he joined Webber and I outside the ER, awaiting an incoming trauma. "Don't you have a gallbladder scheduled for this morning?"

"Hendricks is doing it." Webber nodded.

"You heard about the lion mauling." I chuckled, knowing exactly why both of them had hurried down here. "Came down here to claim it before anybody else could get their hands on it."

"I am down here for those in need, Watley." Webber shook his head. "I am here to be of service to human kind."

"Yeah, well, you cold be of service to human kind in OR three with that gallbladder." Jackson pointed out.

"Try it, son. Try and challenge me." Webber dared him as the two of them stared each other down. I rolled my eyes as the two started to shove each other. I simply ran around them and over to the ambulance that had pulled in.

"Thirty-five year old male, body covered in claw marks and an arm that looks like a chew toy." One of the paramedics briefed us as she handed me the chart, Webber and Jackson coming up behind me.

"Oh, my God. Oh, my God. My arm." The man was panicking as Webber pulled back the gauze on his arm, showing three deep claw marks. "I can't feel my arm."

"Don't worry. I'm gonna take care of you." Webber promised him.

"So am I." Jackson added, taking the chart from me.

"Naomi. What happened to Naomi?" The guy asked us as we started to wheel him inside. "Did the lion eat my girlfriend?"

"These wounds are deep. Avery, page Sloan and Torres." Webber instructed.

"Or you could page Sloan and Torres." Jackson countered, clearly not wanting to leave the patient to Webber.

"Boys," I muttered under my breath as I headed towards the counter to page the other two surgeons.

"Thirty-two year old female, nasty bites to the neck, and her abdomen's been eviscerated." A paramedic presented a new lion victim to me.

"Kirby? Where's Kirby?" She asked as Bailey and I helped the paramedics move her into a trauma room.

"Ma'am, my name is Dr. Bailey and this is Dr. Watley." Bailey introduced us to the woman. "You are at the hospital."

"Transferring on one, two, three." The paramedic counted down before we all moved the woman off the gurney and onto the bed, letting the paramedics get out of here so they could go help someone else.

"Okay, I need to get a look at the neck." Bailey said as we got straight to work.

"What about Kirby?" The woman asked.

"All right, let's call for an OR and page Hunt." Bailey told a nurse as we removed the gauze from the woman's neck, letting us see the deep bite marks to her neck.

"I need to know if Kirby's okay. Did he get hurt?" She asked us once more.

"Um, can you also find out the status of the gentleman who came in with her?" Bailey asked a nurse.

"He's with Webber and Avery in trauma one." I added as the nurse left to get an update on the woman, Naomi's, boyfriend.

"No, no. That's Paul." Naomi corrected us. "I want to know about Kirby, my lion."
