Chapter Eleven: Unaccompanied Minor

*~*~*~*

"There's my favorite little girl." I smiled at Zola when I found Derek and Meredith with her, Meredith holding the crying girl. The couple had decided to start the process to try and adopt her. As soon as the words left my mouth I felt my eyes widen and I looked to Derek. "Don't tell Mark, Arizona, or Callie that I ever said that."

"Got it." He nodded.

"She looks good." Arizona told Derek and Meredith as she joined us with Zola's chart. "Her weight's up and, uh, her previous incisions have healed. The labs are within normal limits... and she's super-duper cute, aren't you?"

"That she is." Derek smiled, glancing at me.

"Yeah," I nodded in agreement as Zola reached out and grabbed my finger.

"So it's an uncomplicated hernia. So you don't have to use any artificial closures, right?" Derek asked us.

"Yeah, no. No, it's really simple. I'll do a short incision in her suprapubic crease to do a traditional exposure, and then I'll..." Arizona trailed off as Zola's crying grew louder. "Finish with a... chupo. Oh, God. I'm sorry. That's- That's what Callie calls a pacifier. But Zola hasn't eaten because of the surgery. She's probably hungry. Um, you might want to try to soothe her with the pacifier."

"Come here, baby. Come here, little baby." I grabbed the pacifier off the table, easily slipping it into Zola's mouth to ease her crying. "Oh, yes. There you go."

"All right. I'll call you when I'm ready to come take her up." Arizona told Derek and Meredith before leading me out of the room. "So, are you ready for your meeting with Hunt?"

"I guess." I shrugged, a sigh escaping me at the though of the chief resident interviews that were taking place today. "Honestly, I'm just excited for all of this competition to be over."

"What do you got?" Lucy asked as she joined Alex, Bailey, Arizona, and I in the ER with our patient, Lebo. She was the older sister of one of the kids that had been brought to the hospital for Alex's program.

"Seventeen year old pregnant female with syncopal episode outside the ER." Alex briefed her as I performed an ultrasound.

"Look, she's got blood in her left lower quadrant." Bailey pointed out on the monitor. "Could be a splenic rupture, but it's hard to tell."

"Abena..." The young woman groaned her sister's name.

"Abena's fine." Alex assured her. "Don't worry about her right now. You need to worry about yourself. You need to have surgery."

"Lebo, why didn't you tell us you were pregnant?" Arizona asked.

"You would've said I cannot fly. I had to be here for my sister." Lebo softly shook her head. "Is something wrong with my baby?"

"I see a strong heartbeat, but there's not much fluid surrounding the baby, and he's very small for thirty-two weeks." Lucy noted.

"She's eight months along?" I frowned.

"Yeah, I'm gonna need to monitor this baby." Lucy told us.

"Well, we need to take her to CT first to see where the abdominal bleeding's coming from." Arizona reminded her.

"I'll meet you in surgery." Lucy nodded as the monitor started to beep erratically.

"She's barely breathing. I'll get an ambu." Alex hurried off.
