Chapter Seven: Pretty Young Thing

*~*~*~*

"I want my coffee." I heard Callie say as I followed Mark into Callie and Arizona's apartment. It had been a couple days since Mark had told me about Callie's pregnancy and the fact that he was the father. While I was still trying to process everything, I wasn't going to let this change things, at least, not too much. "Mark, Beth, tell the woman. I'm allowed to drink one cup of regular coffee."

"Sure you are." Mark nodded.

"Oh, w-wait, Mark." Arizona shook her head. "Are you aware that there are studies that link caffeine with preterm labor, low birth weight, other birth defects?"

"That goo looks great." Mark changed his mind, nodding at the glass of green stuff on the counter. "I say you stick with the goo."

"Beth, please, talk sense into these two." Callie looked to me for help. "I mean, you were going to college and working full time when you were pregnant with Joel, didn't you drink coffee?"

"Yes, but I also didn't have money to make myself healthy smoothies, which I'm guessing that goo is." I picked up the cup, frowning as I looked at the lumps in it. "Though the coffee may be less dangerous than the choking hazard lumps in this."

"Thank you, I think." Callie nodded before looking back at Mark and Arizona. "You two can't just dictate what I'm allowed to eat and drink."

"Nobody's dictating anything." Arizona assured her. "But you're pregnant now, so things have to be different. You're gonna have to eat better and take it easier at work. And well, if it helps, we'll give up caffeine, too."

"Wait, please tell me that I'm not included in that 'we'." I raised my hand, my eyes widening at the thought of giving up my coffee. At this point in my life I was pretty sure that my blood was partially coffee.

"That helps no one." Callie frowned at the suggestion.

"Agreed." I backed her up.

"Well, how about we put it to a vote? All in favor of Callie drinking coffee, raise your hand." Mark said, making Callie and I both raise our hands. "All in favor of the goo."

"Tie, goo it is." Arizona grinned as she and Mark raised their hands. We all watched as Callie picked up her glass, giving a small groan at the smell before she took a drink of it, nearly spitting it back into the glass in the process.

"It's horrible." Meredith complained as we all got ready in the locker room.

"It's the opposite of horrible." Cristina argued.

"Alzheimer's or diabetes?" Meredith sighed.

"If you continue to whine about how you can't decide which groundbreaking medical advancement to put your name on, I'll punch you in the ear." Cristina threatened, making Lexie and I both laugh.

"Well, my name's already on one of them, according to the chief." Meredith pointed out. "I mean, diabetes-"

"Affects two hundred and forty million people worldwide." Lexie recited the statistic.

"And Alzheimer's-" Meredith began.

"Is the seventh leading cause of death." Lexie finished for her sister.

"It's Sophie's Choice." I commented.

"It's Sophie's Choice." Meredith nodded in agreement.
