A few hours later after changing my position on the bench several times and joining in on the girls' games a few times, I decide it's time to head back. I call them in and we walk back to the apartment at a much slower pace then before. Hopefully all they'll want to do is play quietly or watch a movie after lunch, then we can all nap some. I kept finding myself nodding off while I was watching them. The temperature was perfect and the sun felt so nice in the partially shaded position I was in. I had to put on some faster music and pinch myself to stay awake at one point. I unlock the front door and stick my head in, there's no sign of Liam in the living room, but it looks like the door to the guest bedroom is open. I motion the girls in and whisper for them to go and play in Cailyn's room while I go see if Liam is awake yet. They scamper off, pausing near Cailyn's bedroom to see if they can catch a peak of Liam before noticing that I'm frowning at them. They giggle and scamper into the room, closing the door behind them. I head into the kitchen, grabbing a glass of water for myself and wondering what to bring Liam. I stall for another minute before realizing I can't decide on anything he might want and walk down the hallway.
I pause in front of the door, it's half open and I don't want to catch sight of anything I shouldn't. I knock quietly and earn a grunt from inside. I push the door open wider and walk in. He's sitting on the edge of the bed, fully dressed. I notice his phone still on the bedside table and glance to his face. Somehow he looks more broken than he did last night. Last night he was frantic, not wanting to believe it was true. Now he looks worn and weary, like he's carrying the weight of the world.
"Was there...is there any news?" I ask him quietly, shutting the door behind him and walking towards the bed. He lifts his gaze to my slowly, a tortured look in his eyes. He nods his head slowly. "And? Is it..." I stop, my voice breaking off. I try again, opening my mouth but find I can't, not wanting to continue the sentence. My eyes well up, glistening with tears and I see the same look on Liam's face.
"T-they found the wreckage about an hour ago. Paddy woke me up to tell me. He said other things, but I can't even begin to think about all the details right now." I shake my head and wrap my arms around his shoulders. I lean my head against his shoulder and feel him begin to shake. "I keep asking myself why. Why dammit?!" and then he breaks down. So that's it, I think robotically. She's dead. Liam's a widower and Tessie just lost her mother. And I begin to cry too, crying for Tessie and the mother she'll barely remember. I'm crying for Liam and his family and Sophia's parents. I'm crying for the other passengers and the families that are hearing out the same news Liam just has. I cry because it just isn't fair.
Eh not too happy with this :/ Lemme know how it can be improved by leaving a comment <3 I'd love you foreverrrr
