Mother knows best?

"Yes, he brought it over last night." I reassure my mother. She called me a little earlier today, demanding to know what went on yesterday after she talked Liam on my phone.

"He sounded nice, but I was still worried all of last night. He said he had a daughter but who knows what the con artists and thugs are saying to get money and information these days.

"Mmmhmmm, how was your day apart from worrying about me mom?" I try to steer the topic away from Liam, she's hasn't let it drop since we started talking.

"Oh it was fine. I made spaghetti and meatballs for lunch and your father seemed to like them. Are you positive that this man wasn't a criminal?" I roll my eyes and shift the phone to my other ear.

"Yes mother, I'm sure he wasn't a criminal." Not that he would ever need to steal anything, but Liam would make a terrible criminal. Can you imagine him breaking into someone's home, uninvited and making a mess of their home and taking their stuff? He'd probably collapse or something. He's not that kind of person, no matter how much he's loosened up since he was 16.

"And did he actually have a daughter?" my mother continues to question me. I know it would be easier in some ways, telling her the whole story and who exactly she talked to on the phone yesterday. But at the same time I don't really want to talk about it yet. I woke up this morning and decided to not worry about when he was going to call back with news. I even did some job hunting online this morning, I don't want to rely on this job coming through. The more I think about it the more incredulous I am about the possibility of me getting it.

"Yes, he has a daughter. She looks like she's at least a year or so younger than Cailyn."

"Oh so you saw her then?" my mother's curiosity seems to increase.

"I did see her, she came in and played with Cailyn for maybe around half an hour."

"And they got along well?"

"They did. His daughter doesn't seem to talk much, or at least around adults, but they played together without any problems." Her pause after I finish makes me wish I hadn't said quite so much. I can practically hear the gears turning in her head.

"You know darling," she says slowly, planning out the nicest way to say what she wants "I hate that you've moved so far away. It's hard for me not to see you and my granddaughter every day, like I used to. I also find myself worrying much more about you and your love life."

"Mother, please. Not again, must you really bring this up every other time we talk? I am perfectly capable of worrying about my own love life and finding my own men. I don't need you to play matchmaker for me."

"Darling... just hear me out, you need a man in your life, in both you and Cailyn's lives. I know you think you can get a good job with your degree and make something out of yourself and perhaps you can. I know you're independent and very smart. But you need someone to lean on for help and comfort. Everyone does. And what about Cailyn? Would you really have her grow up without a father? All I'm saying is that you should think about it. And if this man's daughter gets along so well with Cailyn already perhaps you try keeping in contact with him. Just to see if anything will develop."

"Mother, you don't even know that he's single. He's married, happily married. I'm not going to fling myself at every man who comes my way and isn't a complete douchebag." I'm breathing a little quicker after that and for a moment all I can hear is her breathing from the other end of the line.

"So he was nice then?"

"Mother, honestly..."

"Fine, fine. Do what you think is best. But please consider looking at least. Be aware of the fish in your coral reef!"

"What does that even mean?? That sounds so wrong oh my-" I hold shake my head and cover my eyes. "Mother you're a menace. Dad shouldn't let you out of the house."

"That's not very respectful!" she laughs and I can imagine her sitting in her favorite chair in the living room, tucked up under a blanket with her magazines and books piled up next to her on the floor. "Ooh your father is back from running out to pick up the new bushes we're going to plant in the front lawn. I'll call you again tomorrow, think about I've told you!!" And she hangs up without letting me reply.
