"I mean it's not like we can say anything for certain, but it would definitely make sense..." I trail off as I scroll pack to the top of the page Liam's found. It's some kind of online Australian magazine with local news. It seems that Hector was speeding because he wasn't used to the metric measurements and ended up going quite fast. He made several of the local news sources, even being shown on the TV. Most of the other news stations or papers reported it but dug no deeper into the story. However the author of this article was curious to find out more about this recently relocated American and ended up finding out he'd been let off with a warning from when he was found causing a scene in a restaurant in town one day. Since he was only given a warning there wasn't anything filed about the incident but the author managed to get a quote from someone who claimed to have been there that day. This witness said Hector seemed to be yelling at a woman he was with and being rude to the staff. They went on to say that he had merely been passing through the area and that they hadn't seen him before or after the event. The author of the article concludes with saying that he hopes Hector wouldn't cause anymore trouble and overall shining a bad light on him. That differed greatly from the other articles that we found earlier on, they rather laughed off the speeding as American tourists being oblivious. With, of course, a solid dousing of distaste for how fast he was going; it was quite fast and very dangerous.
"So, what do you make of it?" I turn toward Liam and cup my chin with my hand. I have a few thoughts, I mean yelling at a woman? Maybe he was mixed up with something, but I have no proof of that and apart from getting drunk he never had any other substances he abused, to my knowledge. So why go to Australia? If he wanted to be sure that he'd gotten far enough away from me, wouldn't have across the country sufficed? Was this woman a friend or partner of some sort and they just had a falling out? Or was she another victim, similar to how he treated me.
"I'm not sure, I mean we know more about what made Sophia so suspicious, it's more than likely that she found this article or another like it. It paints him in a different light than the other articles did and the natural, logical assumption to make is that he was with this woman and was probably abusing her."
"That's sort of what I thought. I mean, I know it's a jumping to conclusions and maybe it's just my paranoia, do you think it's possible that he was mixed up in something else? Why else would he go to a completely different country? What enticed him to go there? Why did Sophia think that going to him could help me?" I sigh and clasp my hand with his, leaning back against the headboard. "I just wish we knew more."
"I know that this has been so hard on you," Liam says, leaning over to press several kisses into the side of my head that's half leaning on his shoulder. "and I am so incredibly proud of you. You're being really strong through all of this."
I smile a little and squeeze his hand tighter. He's so much better at relationship stuff than I am. "I'm not that strong, I've been weak and let it get to me," I wince remembering how he found me in the bathroom. "so really, you've been the strong one. You have been digging through Sophia's files and I can't imagine how hard that's been for you." I rub my other hand up and down his arm, hoping that it's a sweet gesture and not weird how I lift my hand to rub the hairs back into their natural pattern of growth with a single finger. "You're probably weren't prepared to deal with a lot of the things and emotions you have come across on that laptop...hell even just thinking about her. She was your wife!" I start running out of breath towards the end of my sentence and end up gasping and finishing the word 'wife' in a weird voice. It's then that I realize what I've just said. "Did I just make things worse and more awkward because I am getting that vibe, merde." I pull away from his shoulder, but keep hold of his hand. "I'm sorry."
He smiles and squeezes my hand, but I can see the glistening of his eyes and the way his lips tremble just slightly. "No, no. But you are right, it is hard. I'm just grateful that I have you here with me to help me through it. You've been just as much a help to me as I hope I've been to you." He shuts the laptop and pushes it to the side with his foot as he turns his body towards me so we slot together easily. "But we can make it through this, I know it."
Literally stole that speeding story of Louis Cole...adapted it a little but that happened just a week or so ago when he was in New Zealand and I couldn't think of anything better sooooo...yeah. Sorry it's been a while since an update too!
