CHAPTER 6 - THINGS YOU CAN'T OUTRUN

THE NEXT DAY

PTRD

Lazuli is walking into PTRD and is headed towards a certain Absol at his desk, he is on the phone

Spike: "Yes, I'm writing this down, yellow streak at the mall during the gas attack, thank you for calling"

He then hangs up the phone and looks at Lazuli

Spike: "Never fails, tip lines bring out the potheads and the crazies"

Lazuli: "Did they get a good look at the Streak's face?"

Spike: "Not you too"

He then stands up

Spike: "What are you doing here anyway?"

Lazuli then sighs: "We need to talk"

Spike then also sighs and lets her continue

Lazuli: "I thought about what you said, and--"

Spike cuts her off: "I know what you're gonna say I understand, I'm your dad's partner"

Lazuli: "No, no, no, you don't understand I have never really had a serious boyfriend. Between Dad and Speed and work, my life has been full and I really like you"

She then pauses but continues

Lazuli: "But I thought that if I told my dad about us, then it would make this real, and suddenly, it's something that I could lose or screw up"

Spike then smiles at her

Spike: "I wanted it to be real"

He then starts to walk off but Lazuli stops him

Lazuli: "Spike"

He then turns around to face her and then she pulls him in for a kiss on the lips, they both pull back and smile

S.T.A.R. Labs

Pearl is sitting in the room where they tested Speed's well speed and she is facing the wall, Speed is behind her in the window and sees her, he then walks into the room and sits down next to her

Speed: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you, leaving like that"

Pearl then looks at him

Pearl: "It's okay I get it, you had to go, it's just"

She sighs but continues: "That's the last thing that Black said to me that night"

Speed then looks at her and then says something, but then looks back at the ground

Speed: "When my mother died 14 years ago, I used to think that the further away I got from it, the less it would hurt. But some days, the pain, it's worse than the day that it happened"

He then turns back to her: "Some things you can't fight"

Pearl then remains silent for a bit before saying something

Pearl: "For so long, I've been terrified of going into that hole"

Speed: "What if I went with you?"

They then walk down to the doorway to the accelerator and as Pearl approaches the hall, she gets a flashback

FLASHBACK

Pearl rushes into the hall and sees Trace standing there

Pearl: "Where's Black? Trace, where is he?"

Trace: "He's still inside"

She then looks at him in shock

Pearl: "What? Then open the door"
