Chapter Two - Stirring

Rushing out of class and almost trampling his fellow students in the process Jace hurried toward the medical wing. He had things to do, a future to work towards and most importantly a girl to see.

Jace was still only seventeen but he had been working with the good doctor since he'd turned ten. Of course when he started out it was with little odd jobs, like handing the doctor some bandages, jobs he now considered virtually meaningless. As he grew the doctor began to teach as well as trust him more and more. The respect and skill that the doctor possessed inspired Jace to follow in his footsteps.

Arriving at her room Jace took an excited breath and walked in. Lately, the doctor had entrusted him with the task of checking the girl's vitals and making sure everything was the same, if not better, than the day before. This girl's progress seemed to affect Jace in way the doctor had never seen anything affect Jace before and so, in order to encourage this new side of Jace the doctor purposely assigned anything that had to do with the girl to Jace.

As Jace circled the white bed to reach the clipboard where the information was recorded he thought he saw a slight twitch of the white bed sheets out of the corner of his eye. Jace whipped his head around to look at the girl but she was still. After waiting a few moments to ensure she made no movements he went on with his work, noting little numbers on the clipboard.

When he was done and about to exit the room for the day he saw it again. The twitch. But this time he was looking right at her. He knew that a slight movement of her right foot had caused the twitch. As he kept watching the girl turned and rolled onto her other side right before his eyes. Jace could hardly hold back his excitement as he jumped into the air fist pumping.

He ran all the way to the doctor office, "DOC! Doc, where are you!? She moved, like actually moved!" he continued as the doctor became visible amidst the shelves of books in the back of his office, " I really thought she wasn't going to wake up but she's got to now! First it was just her foot kind of twitching but right before I left she actually rolled over onto her other side. This has to mean something good right, Doc?" Jace looked at the doctor expectantly.

"Jace Andrews will you calm down. Now take me to the girl so I can have a look will you? Goodness you look like a child at Christmas." The doctor shook his head lovingly as he followed Jace back out the door.
