Bree watched as a petite girl flicked her flaming red hair over her shoulders and marched towards Bree and Max. After rubbing on Max in a way that made Bree blush, Amber took her position on Bree's other side. When Amber flippantly held out her well manicured hand Bree took it hesitantly, not because she was unsure like she had been with Max but because she was afraid of what she might catch off the girl.
Finally the doctor nodded. Again, Bree imagined streams of energy flowing into her. When she felt satisfied that she'd completed the transfer process she slowly dropped Amber's hand and raised her own towards the target, pushing the energy she held towards it.
Jace came out from behind the target looking a bit irritated. "Doc, let's just do them all, yea? I don't have all day."After a moment of contemplation the doctor gave another silent nod. "Alright everyone!" Jace called.
When all was said and done Bree stood in the center of the room with four people on each side. They all linked hands as Bree repeated the same process. When she was finished the testers dropped their hands and left. Bree stood alone watching the doctor speaking with Jace. She eyed them warily as they neared her.
Jace looked down at his clipboard, "Do you want to try for an element?" he said, speaking to the doctor.
Bree could feel her heart racing, even though she had no idea what he meant. "A what now?"
"An element. You haven't heard of them yet because they're very rare. Usually we only test for them when an Elite shows exceptional abilities in all the areas you just did."
I-I really don't want to do that. I'm not s-special. Aren't the tests enough?"
"It's a very high distinction, Bree, and it's not something to take lightly." The doctor said with a disproving tone.
"The guard said I had to do some simple tests, that's it."
"I was ordered to test you to the extent I feel necessary given the information I have. I feel this is necessary, Bree, I'm sorry if you disagree."
"I do." Bree said fiercely, but the doctor had already left the room. Jace stood staring at Bree. He quirked an eyebrow at her but otherwise stayed quiet. "What!?" She finally snapped.
"Nothing, nothing," he held his hands up in a surrendering position, "you're just odd that's all." he said simply.
"What are you are you getting at now, Jace?"
"Nothing,"he repeated, "It's just usually people are jumping at the chance to show off and to get tested for an element? Well, for the people who actually know about them, it's like legendary. C'mon." Before Bree could respond he motioned for her to follow him and quickly left the room.
Crap. Was all Bree could think.
Bree couldn't help but stare at Jace's muscular arms and toned back that were clearly visible through his tight white shirt. She began to get so caught up in her gazing that she almost didn't notice when he stopped at a door. Giving her a smirk that said her almost-stumble hadn't gone unnoticed, Jace turned the knob and slid into the room.
Bree was relived to realize the sterile white of the other rooms was not the case here. The walls were painted a light silvery blue with matching tables and chairs. In the corner of the room there was four comfortable looking emerald green chairs centered around a small cherry wood coffee table. Immediately, Bree felt at home.
"You're birthday's in February right?" Jace asked from his place in front of a small counter that Bree hadn't noticed. When he turned to look at her Bree could see a sleek coffee maker and some grey mugs laid out.
"Yep. Why?"
"Normally the element you have is connected with what month your birthday is in. Kind of like the old zodiac signs they had on Earth. Did you guys do those in history yet?"
Bree briefly remembered taking some boring notes on the subject, although she hadn't paid much attention because she never really thought they would ever apply to her quiet life. Go figure, she thought. She nodded in Jace's direction as she took a seat.
A few moments later the doctor came in wheeling a large cart in front of him. The cart had four different levels all full of water-filled jugs.
"What am I supposed to do with that?" Bree asked, "Drink them? Jace smirked.
"We believe if you have an element it's going to be water. What better way to test your element then with a whole lot of water?" The doctor finished with a hearty chuckle.
Bree felt a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach.
