Bree stood shocked. She couldn't move even if she had wanted to. The four dark figures sitting in the shadows of the waterfall were none other than the four figures she had seen in her memory with Sabrina just a few minutes before.
"Where the hell did it come from?" A boy about her age hissed. He was a gawky red head with the stereotypical freckled face. His narrowed eyes and slightly pointed nose made him look more rat like than human.
"I told you it was a shield! I bet one of the Guards put it up." The boy who spoke looked to be the youngest of the group. With his wide, baby blue eyes and brown hair Bree guessed him to be about fifteen.
"You're an idiot, Jonathan." A girl said simply, addressing the younger boy. She flicked her waist length brown hair over her shoulder and turned away from him to the fourth member of their party. He was a tall, lean boy with midnight black hair and sea green eyes. He looked to be about since eighteen, the edlest of the group.
The black haired boy turned to Johnathan with a sigh, "I've gone through this with you, John. We did background checks, found out everything we needed to know. Not even a Guard has that much power."
The rat face spoke again in a hiss, "Well what are we going to do now? The leader is still alive, we haven't made our point and no one even knows about The Shadows!"
"You're an idiot, Cole." The girl spoke again.
With another, somewhat frustrated sigh, the black haired boy responded, "Do you really think it's a bad thing no one knows about The Shadows, Cole!? We could would be the number one suspects for an attempted murder and you're seriously worried about people knowing who we are? Are you insane?"
Bree quietly snapped her phone shut and began to back away. The thing about backing away, that Bree failed to remember, is one can't see the twigs they are about to step on. The crack underneath her foot sounded throughout the small space like an echo. Bree cringed.
Immediately, four heads snapped in her direction. Despite the abundance of trees and foliage Bree's pink t-shirt and blue jeans weren't hard to spot.
The black haired boy's eyes narrowed to slits, "Get her." He hissed and in the split second before she took off running Bree could see a resemblance to his rat faced friend.
Bree was only a few feet down the hallway when she heard the heavy door bang shut behind her pursuers. Her mind raced as she tried to think of a place to go or a way to lose them. Taking random twists and turns in the hopes of shaking the group Bree soon grew tired. She knew unless she thought of something fast they would catch her. Taking one last glance behind her she saw that she had gained a few minutes by faking a left and actually taking a right. Then she collided with a hard chest. "Omph!" The chest cried.
Bree looked up to find that the chest was Jace. "Oh Jace! Oh, thank God! Jace I need your help. I need to hide. You need to get me out of here, please. I'll explain later, pl-" Before she could even finish Jace grabbed her elbow and hauled her the few short feet to his apartment. Bree was surprised that even in her haste she had ran straight to Jace's apartment.
Jace slammed the door and slid the deadbolt across. Resting against the door her turned to her, "Now, do you want to tell me what is going on?"
Bree began talking very fast. "I-I went to the waterfall because, well, that's not really that important and when I walked in there were these four people and they were talking about the shield I put up for the leader. Except they didn't know it was me. They were trying to figure out who did it. And they-they called themselves The Shadows. And then I tried to walk away and a twig snapped and they heard me and they chased me and I didn't know what to do and now...I'm here."
Jace blinked. "You do know how crazy you sound, right?"
Bree shrugged, "I recorded it, if that helps." She said simply.
Suddenly, Jace's face lit up. He strode towards her and wrapped his arms around her waist. "That's my girl."
Within a matter of minutes Jace and Bree were sneaking out his door and heading quickly to his father's office. They were about halfway there when a cry sounded from behind them, "There!"
Bree groaned, "Not again."
"Com'on, this way." Jace chuckled as he pulled in into a narrow alleyway. Bree looked at him questioningly. "Do you really think we're dumb enough to only have one entrance to the Guard's quarters?" He questioned her. Henry's office was the third door down, past the wooden sword and on the right. Jace pushed the door open.
Henry's head snapped up when he heard his office door open. There, at his door, were his son and Bree. "Dad, you're not going to like this. Jace spoke.
