All too soon the sun began to sink low in the sky. "I think we should head back." Bree commented, looking up at Jace's illuminated face. He sat with his arms stretched out behind him and his legs in front. The fading sun made his tan skin look absolutely golden and for a moment Bree was forzen, transfixed by the image.

"Yeah." Without another word Jace began to quietly pack up the various empty containers. When he was finished Bree stood and reached out to help fold the checkered blanket. She brought her edge nearer to his and when their finger tips met she felt tiny sizzling sparks. Bree flinched, surprised. She'd always assumed that sort of thing was reserved for fairy-tales.  However, when she glanced up again Jace was going on about his business. Maybe she was more tired then she thought. As soon as the blanket was tucked safely back into the basket the pair headed out.

It was at some point between the haloed rocks and the darkened hallway leading back to the main foyer that Jace's work hardened hand slipped into Bree's much smaller one. For Jace it was a simple and natural reflex but for Bree, after being on her own for so many years, the feeling was both odd and foreign. The small tingles began again even before Bree could pull her hand away.

Jace looked up as Bree cradled her hand to her chest as if she'd been burned. "I, uh, I can't, uh...I can't-" Bree struggled to get the words out without giving herself away. Somewhere in the space of the sixty seconds their hands were joined it had hit Bree that she was unconsciously letting him in. Bree knew she still had a secret and despite the fun she had on their afternoon picnic she tried to keep reminding herself exactly who Jace was - the son of a guard.

Jace was staring at Bree's face as the blood slowly drained from it. A tight knot formed in his stomach. "I have the sinking feeling," he said slowly, "that we're about to ruin our perfectly good memory."

Bree nodded politely, seeing her door just steps away. "Well let's not then, okay?" Before she had even finished her sentence Bree took off towards her door. She slammed the door quickly and falling against it she slid the bolt across. Jace stood frozen in his spot wondering if running after her would really do him any good. Finally, after deciding against it, Jace began his short walk home pondering the sizzling sparks he's felt in the field all the way.
