By the end of the files Bree was in serious need of some air. She sat by the window while Jace finished his last file and looked at the people sitting in the waiting room. Were all these people losing power too? What did it feel like? She struggled to remember details from her own experience but all she could come up with was the feeling of exhaustion. Bree watched as a young couple came in with their smiling toddler.
"Jace?"
"Yea?"
"Tell me you're done."
"I'm done. Why?"
"I need to leave."
"Bree, what's wrong?"
"I'm leaving, Jace. Are you coming or am I on my own?" Bree stood up to leave but Jace grabbed her hand.
"Oh no you don't." He mumbled.
Jace led them to the waterfall. After they were both seated and comfortable he turned to her. "Now tell me, what's wrong? Why did you all of a sudden need to leave?"
"I-I just couldn't deal with those people."
"Bree."
"What!?"
"Look at me." She reluctantly turned to look at him. "You're safe." And he said it with such reassurance that for a minute Bree couldn't help but believe him.
"My parents died of that. Of a loss of power - it's how they died."
Jace didn't say anything for a while, so long that Bree started to hope he just hadn't heard her but then his strong arms were around her and for the second time in two days she lost it. When she was finished and Jace had romantically allowed her to dry her tears with his shirt he spoke.
"Tell me the story, Bree."
"What story?"
"All last night you told me great things about you and your parents but you never once mentioned how they died. Just tell me, get it out."
Bree studied Jace for a minute. His sincere, shining eyes, his lips in a serious frown that seemed so out of place for him, then she nodded, she knew there was no way she could tell him the truth but from the look in his eyes he wasn't going to stop until he got answers. "Okay." Leaning back into the rock she began. "My parents got sent on a mission...I don't know where...when they came back they got really sick and they're powers drained completely. It took like three weeks. It was horrible." And even though most of the story wasn't true talking to Jace still made her feel a little better.
"So when you saw loss of power-"
"It brought everything back."
"Let's do something fun."
"Excuse me?"
"F-U-N. I know, new concept for you but just come on." Grabbing Bree's hand Jace hauled her up and dragged her with him. Bree followed Jace back inside, down a long corridor and through one of the training rooms until they were once more outside. This time, however, they were in a rock field. The was miles and miles of nothing but rocks. The smallest pebbles started spaced out at their feet, as the rows stretched further and further away from the pair the rocks became bigger and bigger.
"What is this, Jace?"
He looked at her wonder struck face and grinned. "Fun." Then he stretched his hand out in front of him palm up. Slowly he moved his hand upward while curling his fingers in to make a fist. As he did this a middle sized rock in the middle of the field rose off the ground. Suddenly, Jace brought his hand down swiftly. The rock came down as well, crashing into the earth. Catching onto the useless game Bree laughed, mimicking his actions with an every larger rock. Jace smiled proudly at her when she brought it crashing to the ground. The pair proceed to take turns with even bigger rocks until finally when Bree brought a rather large boulder down easily Jace just stared.
"What?" She finally asked, begining to become uncomfortable.
"How many bars are you?" He asked with wonder. Bree looked between Jace and the row of large boulders finally realizing that for the last several throws Jace had been struggling. She'd been having to much fun to remember to keep her wits about her.
"I knew this was a bad idea. I have to go. Bye Jace." Bree started to run before he could respond.
