When Bree walked out in a lace coral summer dress and a casual brown leather jacket Jace almost lost it. He almost asked her right then and there. Almost.
Instead he stood and smiled so wide he felt like face would spilt in two. "You look beautiful." he exclaimed sincerely.
An adorable rose shade coloured Bree's cheeks as she looked downwards demurely. "I wasn't sure where we were going. I hope it's okay."
It's more than okay Jace thought to himself but instead he simply said, "Come on, let's go," as he took her hand and led her to the door.
At first Bree followed without question but soon her unusually quiet and cooperative persona faded.
"Jace! Where in the world are you taking me!?" When he only ignored her and kept walking she pulled against his grip on her arm and then proceed to stomp her foot like a four year old.
Jace stopped short eyeing her skeptically. "Did you seriously just stop your foot?"
"Oh will you just hurry up and take me there!?" Bee huffed.
Jace chuckled and look directly above Bree's head pointedly. She froze and turned around slowly. The realization that they were standing outside the most expensive and talked about restaurant in the Acadmey hit her like freight train and she gasped, whirling back around to face him.
"Worth the wait?" he teased before pulling her against him and striding into the lobby.
They were seated by a hostess who almost fell flat on her face more than once because she was eyeing Jace rather than looking where she was going. Just like in all the books Bree read Jace was completely oblivious. That thought brought her up short. Bree marveled at how much her date already resembled an amazing, unattainable fairytale.
Much to Bree's stubborn dissatisfaction when the waiter arrived Jace shot her a wink and hushed her when she began to order. He then ordered for the both of them, including their desserts, and shooed the waiter away.
"Jace Andrews" Bree spoke evenly.
"Hm?"
"I am about to do to you what I did to those rocks back in that field." She stated with a blank expression.
Jace chuckled again. "Love you too, darling." He threw out. A little shock wove it's way through Bree's body at his words, though she simply scowled at him.
Before long the food arrived. Reluctantly Bree admitted it smelled delicious. After the first bite she wholeheartedly agreed that it was the most amazing thing she'd ever tasted, especially given that she was prone to frozen dinners and boxes of KD. Jace looked on with a smug grin as she dug in.
When a dark chocolate truffle cake arrived for dessert Bree thought she'd died and gone to heaven. Then the waiter set a small green bottle in the center of the table. It was uncapped and empty, save for the worn looking piece of brown paper rolled inside. She eyed Jace warily but he just shrugged at her.
Cautiously, as if it was a bomb about to explode, Bree reached for the note. After unrolling it quickly Bree's heart stopped at the tiny scrawl inside.
After losing her parents, after being hunted, being invisible had been necessary. But it had crossed the line to a point where being invisible had become part of her. Bree never thought she could even dream of someone noticing her like the boy sitting across from her did. Somehow, she felt like he saw her better than she saw herself.
Pay,
It seems a bit late to ask this but how would you like to be my girlfriend? I know life hasn't always been the easiest for you and you've had to face a lot alone but how would you like to have someone to face the world with, finally?
Together?
With tears brimming in her eyes Bree looked up at the one person to ever really see her and whispered, "Together."
