Three days after Jace had left Bree's room he still wasn't sure what to do. On one hand, seeing Bree's smile at the rock field was worth everything he'd done to get her there but on the other, she drove him crazy. Completely and utterly crazy.  In his head it made sense to never talk to her again, he'd only known her for a week after all but he couldn't do it. Every time he even thought about leaving Bree it was like something clamped around his heart. It didn't make any sense. Running his hand through his hair in frustration Jace put down his water bottle and went back to his workout. When he was done he took the fluffy white towel that had been resting around his neck and threw it in the bin.  The towel swished into the bin and Jace laughed when suddenly he collied into something. He looked down, make that someone, he thought.

"Seriously?" Bree couldn't believe her luck, out of everyone in the academy it had to be Jace she banged into.

"Well, I'm sorry too, excuse me." Jace smirked, crossing his arms. Bree shook her head and moved to walk around him. "Bree? Can we talk?"

"Move it or lose it Andrews. Some of us aren't born into the guard like you and therefore have to work for what we have, okay?" When Jace finally met her gaze her saw the fire burning there. He slowly moved out of her way, he let his gaze follow her until the door to the girl's change room swung shut behind her. Then, Jace left.

He marched towards the hospital wing, keeping his eyes on the gray brick beneath his feet.  When he heard voices calling his name from the games room he ignored them, he was too focused on his destination.

"Jace?" The doctor asked when Jace finally arrived.

"Doc, remember when I was a kid and you told me when I got to a place where I didn't even understand my own thoughts I could talk to you?" Jace asked not waiting for an answer, "Well, I can't understand my own thoughts, Doc, and it's making me crazy."

The doctor nodded. "Sit down, Jace." When Jace had done as he was told the doctor continued. "What's wrong?"

"Everything!" The doctor gave Jace a pointed look. "Okay, not everything."

After watching Jace struggle for several minutes the doctor prompted, "Start at the beginning Jace."

"Right." he nodded. "Well I guess it's finding Bree. I found her and then it was like you gave me all this responsibility to look after someone all by myself and finally, someone was mine." Jace looked up to the doctor for confirmation. "Does that sound crazy?"

"No, it sounds like a boy who was excited to prove himself to me." The doctor replied evenly.

"Exactly! And with everything my Dads been saying I just thought maybe it would be proof to him too, you know? But then he asked me to question Bree and she's just so, so...annoying. She drives me crazy! But when she smiles, Doc, it like none of the craziness even matters. When she cries, it like she breaks my heart."

"And so what's wrong with caring for someone, Jace?"

"I just met her a week ago!" He exploded.

"So?" The doctor crossed his arms and sat down in the chair next to the desk Jace was perched on.

"So? Isn't that odd? Dramatic? Fictional?"

"That's life, Jace. Life's odd, it's dramatic and sometimes it can seem downright fictional. Why does that matter? It's not like you've gone and fallen in love with her. So what if you care about her? She's a mystery, she has an aura of importance, both things I'm sure you're little detective-like mind can't help but be drawn to. But, so what?"

Suddenly Jace could see everything in a different light. Thanking the doctor he retraced his steps. He laughed at the little girls stares and smiled at all his friends. His talk with the doctor had given back Jace some perspective that he had lost.

Arriving just as she was leaving Jace walked up to the girl who had taken over his thoughts. Despite her protests he grabbed her hand and led her to her room. Even in sweaty gym clothes he thought she looked powerful.

"Unlock it. Shower get changed, whatever. I'll wait." She attempted to argue as she unlocked her door but he just pushed it open before pushing her in after. Settling in on the couch Jace finally allowed himself to laugh.

"This okay?" Bree asked when she entered the room again, gesturing to her tight red tee and faded jeans. Jace's gaze trailed up her body for a few minutes before he realized she was still speaking, "...nothing special but I didn't know where we were going."

"What?" He asked, trying to keep his eyes on her face.

She laughed, shaking her head. "Nothing. Now that I'm dressed tell me why you're here when three days ago you were kicking my door?"

Jace shrugged from his position on the couch. "Life's short."
