After finally realzing Bree wasn't coming back anytime soon, a bewildered Jace left for his room. He quickly changed his clothes and headed over to his parents room for their nightly family meal. As soon as Jace let himself in he heard his father talking, "Still?...So she's the only lead we have...Maybe...Well, he is only seventeen and not trained at all...Me and Brimstone...Very well. Please inform him. Set the room up for tomorrow morning...Bye."
"Set what up, Dad?" Jace asked once his father turned around.
"Nothing, son. The guard's only lead is still that girl you questioned. They think it's a good idea to bring her in again."
"Why!?"
"Well, we can't very well let a case like this go unsolved for very long, Jace." He father said laughing. "Why are you suddenly so interested in guard business?"
Jace shurged, "I'm not -"
"Supper's ready!" Jace sighed, thankful for his mother's interruption. His mind was on overdrive. He was worried about how Bree would react to a guard questioning and more importantly how she would react to him if that guard happened to be his father.
Jace hardly tasted his mother's home cooked meal. He couldn't bring himself to ask for seconds or enjoy the dessert like he normally would. He had a bad feeling about the questioning that he couldn't quite explain and he wanted to get to Bree before anyone from the guard did. But of course after he was finished his father asked to see him in the office. Jace mashed his lips together but nodded. He knew where the conversation would be going and couldn't think of any way to get out of it.
"Son."
"Dad."
"I wanted to talk to you -"
"About the guard."
"Well, yes -"
"You want me to join it. Dad, we've had this conversation a billion times."
"Well I want to have it again." Jace jumped when his father banged his fist on the desk. "I've let you fool around at the hospital wing for years thinking it would get those silly ideas out of your head. You're almost an adult Jace, it's time to grow up and follow your destiny."
"But Dad, I'm not fooling around at the hospital! I'm working! I work hard, I help people. If that's what I want to do why can't you just let me do it?"
"Why can't you just do what your told Jace!?" Jace stared at his father. He loved his family. His childhood had been great but for some reason his father could never get past Jace's choices in a future profession.
"Dad-"
"Next week you try out for training camp, Jace. Weather you like it or not you are going to do this. After that we can discuss this further. Deal?" His father looked exhausted. Jace felt bad that he couldn't be the son his father wanted.
"Dad, I can't do that. I have work at the hospital. If I got into the camp I'd have to miss weeks at the hospital and I would lose my spot with Doc. I'm sorry, but I'm not trying out." Before his father could argue further Jace stood up and walked out.
Bree was stretching in her living room when she heard the banging at her door. It was getting late and she wondered who it could be. Opening the door about an inch, without sliding the chain lock across, she peeped out. As soon as her eyes landed on the person standing there she slammed the door again, fuming.
The banging continued, "Aw! Come on, Bree! It's not like you can pretend you're not home!" Jace shouted. When he received no reply he tried again, "Bree! Seriously, even if you're mad at me for whatever reason you need to open up!"
"GO AWAY JACE!"
"Knock it off, Bree. This is important!"
"GO AWAY!"
"FINE! But you know, all I've been trying to do since I met you was help. Help! That's it, Bree! I don't have some diabolical plan to ruin you, okay!? Is that what you needed to hear?" Jace kicked at the door, frustrated. "Whatever, I'm done." He mumbled walking away.
Inside Bree turned with her back to the door and slid down to the floor. Placing her head in her hands she wondered what had happened to her peaceful, boring life. Finally pulling herself together Bree got up and went to bed.
She woke up with a start. For the second time in a matter of hours there was a banging on Bree's door. "Jace Andrews you can go to-" Bree stopped when instead of Jace at her door she spotted a larger, older man. "H-hello?" Bree stuttered, surprised.
"Bree Micheals?" The man asked.
"Yes?"
"I'm going to need you to come with me ma'am." The man reached out and grabbed Bree's elbow hauling her outside.
Bree's heartbeat sped up. She wondered what the man could possibly want. Why would he just show up at her door like that?
"Ma'am," the man repeated in a patient voice, "you need to come with me." He reached for her again but Bree jumped back.
"Why!?" She cried.
"It will all be explained when you get there ma'am, the guard would just like to ask you a few questions please." Eventually, seeing no other way out, Bree nodded and proceeded down the hall, assuming the beefy man would follow her.
