He couldn't stop crying. It was cold and he was shaking so we shared a jacket.

We started a small fire on a pile of slightly wet sticks to keep warm. I try to calm him down. He was shaking and whimpering.

"Darry didn't mean to do that, Pone. He got a little carried away." I said as I rub his back. He kept crying, wiping his tears. "Calm down, he doesn't hate you. He cares a lot about you, it might not look like he does, but he does."

"Just take your time and then come back home when you're ready. He'll apologize." I said. "Okay." He mumbled. "What are you doing out at the lot anyway?" He asked. "I wanted to go the Dairy Queen to get myself a milkshake, then you bumped into me." I said. "What are you doing getting a milkshake at this time?"

"I don't know, I just felt like it. Besides, the DQ opens for 24 hours." I said. There was a small silence. Just the sound of the wood crackling from the fire.

"Getting away from everything feels good." He said. "Yeah it does." I replied, playing with the fire using a stick. "You know I wish I could have a normal family again." He said. "What do you mean?" I asked.

"You know, a normal family. Like normal parents, a normal dog, normal house." He said. "So you didn't have normal parents?" "I did but I miss the feeling." He said. "You didn't have a normal dog?" I asked. "I never had a dog, Y/n." He said.

We laughed a little. "You know, I don't feel like I could be close to you." He whispered. "I mean we're close right now and all..."

"What do you mean close, Pony?" I asked. "Well, I mean close you know. We're not similar. You're more like Dallas, you're tough and cool. And I'm just a bookworm." He said. "Everyone's cool in their own ways Pone." I said.

"What do I mean to you?" He asked. "What do you mean to me? Pony, you're like the closest friend I have." "That's good, its good to be close friends. It's just that..." He started.

"I feel we could be more than that." He whispers. I look at him. "Pony..." "I really like you, Y/n." He said. I glanced at him. "Yeah but we can't be together. I'm Dallas' best friend and for him to know that his best friend is with his other best friend, he might just kill us both." I said. He scoffs.

"It's okay Pone, you're about to start sophomore year and I'll be graduated. You'll find someone better than me." I said as I put my arm around him. "Jesus, who could be better than you?" He said.

"I know right!" I said as we laugh.
