Just Breathe

Yuzuru was replaying the conversation he had three hours ago with the new doctor and hoped that the original one will return soon.

-Don't get surprised if she wakes up, because of the ventilator she will start choking, but that is a normal reaction. We will then immediately remove the tube.

-When.

-Pardon?

-When she wakes up. Not if.

-Well, it is now taking way more time than it should. We cannot give you any promises.

-Dr. Wilson said "When".

-Dr. Wilson has tendencies to get too attached to her patients.

Yuzuru frowned and rather turned back to Anya so that this doctor wouldn't see his angry glare. Though this one definitely seemed very capable to him as well, she did explain to him again exactly what her injuries were and how are they going to heal on their own now, except for the brain bleed that still needs to be monitored.
She introduced herself as Dr. Ramesh but after she left, Yuzuru only thought of her as Dr. If and was pretty sure that Anya would prefer this doctor over his Dr. When. Just her damn pragmatism. But he rather stuck to the words of Dr. Wilson who was at least giving him hope.

Yuzuru then got his wallet from his jacket and sat down back to her, for the hundredth time trying to talk her out of that damn sleep.

-I know your memory is pretty good, but just to remind you....you still need to finish the Physics Ph.D., and for the Discovery point, you actually need to wake up to explain it to me, because I am not sure what qualifies for it. Do you wish to discover a new object in the Universe? Or was the new approach in Math you already discovered for the Fields Medal enough?

Yuzuru kept switching his gaze from her closed eyes onto her hand in his, just to make sure he wouldn't miss even the tiniest reaction to his words, but there was still none.

-And you still need to kick Magnus' butt in the Normal chess and take his World Champion title. I mean, c'mon, he has it since 2013....that is just getting ridiculous.

Nothing.

-And most of all, obviously the Nobel Prize....

He looked at her eyes again full of hope, but still no reaction.

Yuzuru hung his head and lifted her hand to his lips, giving her soft kisses on the top of her palm.

-Anya, I love you so so so much, you can't do this to me. I can live with not having you, but I cannot live if you are gone from this world. Please, I'm begging you.

His tears started to slide down her hand as he kept telling her how much he loves her, but there was still no reaction.

He wiped his tears and went to the nurse's station on their floor, asking if they have the things Anya arrived with.

The nurse went to a large metal locker with various drawers and a moment later took out a small plastic bag with Anya's wallet and other accessories.
Yuzuru thanked the nurse and quickly scanned the contents.

-Um. She was wearing a blue string around her wrist. Like this one.

He showed her his wrist with the blue string but the nurse just shrugged her shoulders.

-If it's not in the bag, then very probably it had to be cut off for the surgery and was thrown away together with the clothes.

Yuzuru nodded and asked the nurse for scissors. She did look confused but handed them to him, curious what is he planning to do.
Yuzuru put the open scissors to the spot with multiple knots on his string, knowing he wouldn't be able to untie it anymore and cut it there. Then he measured exactly half of the string and cut it in the middle.
He handed the scissors back to the nurse and returned to Anya's room, putting the plastic bag with her things into a drawer in the nightstand.
