"We made it," you whispered and everything went black.
You'd woken up to nothing. Quite literally, you had woken up without your clothes, memory, and any idea of who you were. You hadn't had any idea where you were but you had found a small-town walking alongside the road where people had given you shelter. No matter how much you'd tried, you couldn't remember anything. The townspeople had debated over taking you to a hospital and the police station but given the winter storm, it would've been a difficult journey. You had lived with them until things would get better when things had started coming back to you slowly.
One night, you'd woken up from a nightmare and all you could see were bright blue eyes and a loud explosion in the background. You had woken up with a grave feeling that you were missing something and there was a sharp pain on your back. You hadn't been able to rest since then. A couple of nights later, the nightmare had returned except when you woke up, the edge of your bed had been turned. You could feel the thumping of your heart beating in your ears. You had felt something inside you, something you hadn't felt before.
You let it touch you and let out through you. You could bend and move things on your will but it had been short-lived. It had gone away just as spontaneously as it had come. Over the next few days, the more you fed to that power, the more you were able to remember. Consequently, the more that never-ending dread took over you that you were missing something.
Until one night when you dreamt of packing a tiffin for James with Steve. That had been the last tick. You'd gotten up in the middle of the night, put on some warm clothes, and had left. You hadn't known where to go or if you had seen was even true. But you knew you had to try.
As things started to become clearer, things became easier. A few weeks after, a SHIELD agent surveillance camera had picked up your signature and you had been taken to their HQ at once. From then on, remembering had been easier. You were told you used to have wings but you didn't know and you realized that was why you had been feeling empty. The myth had run true. The wings of Isis' that had once protected you all those years ago had stayed with you for so many years and nobody had known why until now. They had been with you to protect you again all these years later and once that was done, they'd left.
When they proposed to contact Steve, you decided against it. You asked for their address and an agent had escorted you there. You had waited on the porch steps when you'd heard a car get into the driveway and a voice singing, "Baby shark doo doo". You'd smiled instantly having recognized the voice.
"Hello, James." You said as you stood up when James ran over to the porch and saw you there. He stood there for a while before he jumped.
"Baba!" He screeched but as you walked towards him, he ran away. "Dada! Look, baba! Baba!"
And then you'd seen him, walking with a cloth bag hanging from his shoulder. "You mean dada, James?"
You saw him follow where James was pointing at you and looking at you in disbelief. The way he'd scooped up James and had stepped back, you were afraid he'd either run away or knock you down thinking you were an impostor.
"Y/N?"
"Steve."
"You came back."
"Always."
