"What? No, no. I swear, that wasn't us. I... no, I do understand that. I'll just call you back in an hour, alright?" You said and shut the call hurriedly. It was the orphanage. Apparently, SHIELD had sent the orphanage a notice on your behalf stating that you were withdrawing your adoption application. You quickly dialled up Mace. You couldn't help but anxiously count the number of rings over the phone. Mace wasn't picking up.
What if the orphanage had called up Steve instead of you? Wasn't Mace supposed to be handling situations right now? "Oh, for fuck's sake. Pick up the damn call." You muttered under your breath.
"Who's not picking up?" You jumped a little when Steve walked into the room. You quickly cut the call. Steve was in his running clothes and was still sweating quite heavily.
"God, Steve. How many times do I have to tell you to not sneak up on people like that?" You said, trying to divert the subject.
"I'm sorry." Steve said. "Who were you trying to call?" He asked again casually, walking into the kitchen. It obviously wasn't casual though. Steve could read all of the signs. You were up way earlier than usual, you were fidgeting with your phone in your hand and your left feet was ever so lightly shaking. You were hiding something, point blank period. Even though Steve had promised himself not to think too much about everything that happened the day before but he just couldn't clear his mind.
"Oh, it's nothing. This guy at the headquarters. We were looking for a particular file in the archives and he said he'd give me a call when it he found it. I woke up to his missed call and-"
"Okay, you're doing it." Steve put his glass of water aside. "You're knitting elaborate details and that is the final indication that you're hiding something."
"What? Steve, no! Why would-"
"Okay, fine. Don't tell me. I trust you. If it's something you believe I should not know about, I won't budge. Just don't lie to me, okay?" He said and caressed your cheek with a smile.
"God, Steve. Why do you have to be so sweet?" You sighed and couldn't help but lean into his touch, feeling terrible for everything that was going on and you having to lie to him.
Steve merely smiled and leaned down to kiss you. It was a gentle kiss and that was, as it appeared, everything you needed to calm down. "You probably should shower before you get all that sweat on me though." You said into the kiss as you felt him wrapping his arms around. "I'm not planning to shower till late today."
Steve chuckled and pulled back, "Right, sorry." He said and went to the bathroom.

"But you said I could take him to the orphanage and everything! You said you'd look into the matter." You said as you stood up from your chair in anger. You had set up another meeting with Mace to talk to him about the withdrawal of the application but all you had been getting from him for the majority of the past hour was:
"I'm looking into it, Y/N. Calm down." He said for the millionth time.
"Can you not fucking understand? I have a husband who thinks we're having a child, we have a child who thinks he's getting new parents and a home but none of it is actually happening and you expect me to calm down?" You said and lumped back into your chair, massaging your temples as you took deep breaths. "You don't know Steve, Jeffrey. If he finds out... god knows what'll happen. I'll do anything, trust me. Please don't ruin this for Steve."
"That's an exciting preposition." You heard a voice from behind you and you recognised it immediately. Your brows furrowed deep when you turned around to see Clint walking up to you and Mace. "You'll do anything?"
