"Avery. You got a second?"
Jackson and I turned to Hayes shortly after we entered the E.R.
"Hey, everything okay?" Jackson checked.
"I’ve been better, mate."
He turned his head, showing the wounded area.
"You okay? What happened?"
Hayes chuckled.
"My boy would love to tell that story. Isn't that right?"
His son excitingly nodded, proceeding to tell us. I kissed Jackson's cheek, stepping away to clock in.
I was back at work, finally, though no surgery. Despite enjoying my time, I was beyond ready to come back. My excitement couldn't be contained when I heard that I was cleared.
"Oh, uh, hey, Sage."
I turned my head to Richard, waving.
"How we doing, old man?"
He lightly chuckled, sitting down. I put my stuff away, putting on my white coat then turning to him.
"I know what you're thinking."
"I did nothing but look at you."
"I can't explain it.. I... She's been a comfort space since DeLuca died.." Richard sadly confessed.
"With so much going on, I don't know how to deal. I mean, Hayes is in the E.R. with-"
"What?! My Hayes?"
"Yeah."
"Why are we still standing here? What's his condition?"
"Richard, relax. Jackson is taking care of him."
The old man sighed, slowly making his way to the door.
"I'd still like to check. Mind walking with me?"
After making sure I had my things, we went down to the emergency room to find Hayes in the same bed.
"Webber.."
"I think we need more doctors than patients, Dr. Hayes."
"Ah, I know. Protest got out of hand.. long story short, here I am."
I looked through the sliding doors, seeing Catherine pass. Richard was oblivious, clearly entertained by Hayes' bravery.
By the time I got outside, she was nowhere to be seen.
"Crap.."
"Is everything okay?" Richard asked.
"You ran out here like something was wrong."
"No, I-"
"Watch out!" Richard shouted, pointing behind me.
