Perhaps it was too soon to propose after only graduating three weeks ago but you just couldn't wait. You had been in love with her since middle school and had been dating Itsuki for almost 4 years. You knew she was the one for you because you couldn't picture yourself building a future with another.
"What do you think of this one?"
Yumemi removed her sunglasses as she looks down at the ring that you were showing her. She lets out a noise of disapproval, making you roll your eyes.
"Seriously? We've been looking at rings for weeks and you don't like anything that I do."
"That's because you pick the ugliest things. If you're going to marry Itsuki, the ring has to be perfect. She would dump you if you pick something that she'll hate."
"I don't know why I call you my best friend, Yumemi. You should be building my confidence in the proposal, not making me doubt my decision."
She sighs and lets her eyes wonder to other rings.
"I simply want for the two of you to start off your marriage in the right path. Itsuki will talk about the proposal for years. You don't want for her to say that she hated the ring."
"Alright. I see your point. I'll keep looking."
"It's a good thing that you have me looking out for you. She would've turned you down the minute that you showed her any of the rings that you had picked out. I think I just found the perfect one."
She motions you over to the case and you can't help but agree. It was perfect and there was no doubt in your mind that Itsuki was going to love it.

You couldn't stop smiling after making the purchase of the ring. Now that you finally had it, all you needed to do was plan the proposal.
You arrive home to find the apartment in complete darkness. It was strange considering that you Itsuki was always home before you with most of the lights turned on.
There was no text to let you know she was going to be late so you had no clue as to where she was or what had happened. You called her but it just went straight to voicemail. Not wanting to bother her with more calls as she might be still at work, you sent her a message that you were home and to not worry about dinner as you were already going to prepare it.
Once the message was sent, you began to take out all the necessary ingredients to prepare her favorite.

After taking almost an hour to prepare dinner, you had finally finished. You checked your phone in case you had missed a notification from her but there was nothing. Not hearing from her made you worry but you pushed it down as you began to set the table.
You make your way to the dining table to set the plates when you notice a letter with your name written in her handwriting. Setting the plates on the side, you grab the letter and take a seat.
Your heart was racing as you stared at the letter. You had a feeling that whatever was inside it wasn't good. When you finally worked up the courage to open it, you immediately noticed the smeared letters from where Itsuki's tears must've fallen.
'I'm sorry. You must think I'm a coward for doing this through a letter but my heart couldn't bear to see the pain that I'm going to cause. You must know that I truly do love you. I had always dreamed a building a future with you but my father has other plans for me. He wishes for me to marry Kaede. When I first heard of his plans, I refused to partake in them. I didn't wish to marry, Kaede. I wanted to marry you. I still do but then he threatened to ruin your life if I didn't do what he wanted me to do. If there was another way to keep you safe, I would do it in a heartbeat. I am truly sorry, (y/n). I only hope that you find someone else to make you happy.'

After crying all night long, you barely had enough energy to call Yumemi.
"Don't tell me, she already found the ring. I knew I should've kept it."
"Y..yumemi, I need you."
Yumemi's cheerful tone dropped when she heard your shaky voice.
"I'm on my way, (y/n). Don't go anymore."

Yumemi breaks a few speed limits to arrive at your place at a record time. She immediately takes notice of the plates of dinners that still had food in them.
"(y/n)? Where are you?"
"In here." She hurries to follow your sound of voice to find you under the covers of your bed, holding on to a piece of paper. "She broke up with me, Yumemi. S..she's going to marry, Kaede."
Yumemi pulled you to lay against her so she could run her fingers through your hair to help soothe you.
"Then she's a fool for marrying that idiot. You should get some rest. We'll talk about this when you've gotten some sleep."
You didn't have to be told twice as you closed your eyes to sleep.
