Y/N POV:

Slumping back into the chair at the receptionist desk, I ran a hand over my face, trying (unsuccessfully) to wake myself up a little bit more. I had been on shift for the last ten hours and the ER had been non-stop since the moment I walked in the door. A ten-car pileup on the highway had sent a ton of patients our way then a shooting outside a gas station followed by an apartment fire. We were lucky with that one, some minor burns and smoke inhalation. We had all let out a collective sigh of relief knowing that one could have been a lot worse.

Unfortunately the shooting victim wasn't as lucky. A gas station robbery gone wrong ended up with a Good Samaritan losing his life after his attempt to save the gas station attendant. The young man had come into the gas station at the time of the robbery and called the gunman's attention to himself. When the gunman turned, he shot the young man in the chest before leaving the scene. The attendant tried to stop the bleeding but unfortunately the wound was too severe and the young man died in the ER.

"You look tired chica." A familiar voice broke into my thoughts and I opened my eyes to see Arely standing next to me. She handed me a can of Coke and I gave her a grateful smile, needing the caffeine it would provide. "I know it's no bueno for you but it's a little necessary right now."

Rolling the can over my head, I nodded in agreement. "Yeah you're right. I'll drink extra water when I get home later." Ever since New Year's Eve, I had been keeping pretty steady with my resolution for the past five weeks, making lunches and bringing them to work instead of relying on my favorite candy from the vending machine, the one that always seemed to be stocked.

Arely rubbed my shoulder soothingly. "It's going to be okay. Only a couple more hours to go then you can go home and take a nice hot shower." Arely gave me a grin and I knew she had something on her mind. "But anyways, I have a favor to ask of you. You know that group I like, BTS? They're going to be coming to town in March. One of my primas was supposed to go with me but she changed her mind. Can you go instead?" Arely's eyes were pleading and her mouth turned down in a pout, the perfect puppy dog look.

I sighed, not really into the music but not willing to turn down my best friend. "Sure. I guess I can go."

"Ahh this is why you're my favorite amiga. I promise you will love it. They are absolutely fantastico!" Arely pulled me up from the chair and hugged me, her eyes filled with excitement. She went to say something else, but a beeping sound from her waist distracted her and she looked down, checking the small electronic device attached to her hip. "You would think with all the technology in the world, hospitals would no longer need pagers."

"You say that all the time but you know as well as I do that it's the most convenient in a hospital, especially when they are trying to reach several of us at one time." This was a long-standing complaint of Arely's and one that amused me.

"Yeah yeah yeah. I know." Setting down her own can of Coke, Arely sighed. "I've got to go check on the patient in room 104. Apparently he is throwing caca again. Lucky me." Arely shuddered as she spoke and I couldn't help but laugh. "Laugh now amiga but next time it's your turn. Hasta luego." With a wave, Arely headed down the corridor and I shook my head at her silliness.

I had met Arely when she transferred to the hospital from one in Mexico City three years ago. She had grown up in southern California when her parents immigrated from Mexico right before she was born and had attended school in the US, but when her grandmother got sick while she was in high school, her family moved back to Mexico to take care of her. Arely finished high school in Mexico and attended college at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, excelling in their nursing program. The night she started at the hospital, she had sauntered into the ER, introduced herself to me and told me I was going to be her new best friend. Stunned by her boldness, I simply nodded my head and we had been close ever since.
