After their practice, Jennie and Lisa got home, still not speaking to each other. Lisa started preparing dinner, but she suddenly heard the loud sound of glass shattered from the living room.
She stopped what she was doing and walked towards the living room. Almost there, she saw Jennie's bleeding foot. Lisa ran to Jennie with a worried and angry expression on her face.
"Jennie, what the heck are you doing?" Lisa shouted. Jennie froze, scared. It was the first time Lisa had ever raised her voice at her. Jennie started crying—not from the pain of her wound but because Lisa yelled at her. Jennie was terrified, thinking Lisa was mad at her for breaking the flower vase that her mother had given her.
Jennie stood frozen amidst the broken glass, crying. Lisa, wearing slippers, approached her and scooped her up in a bridal style. Jennie continued crying as Lisa carried her to the couch and gently placed her down.
"I... I'm s... sorry, L... Lisa," Jennie stammered through her sobs. "I... I'm really s... Sorry I broke your mother's v... vase, the one she gave you hand madden for you," she said, still crying hard.
Lisa went to the kitchen to grab the medical kit and returned to find Jennie still crying. It shocked Lisa—it was her first time seeing Jennie cry this much. Lisa knelt on the floor in front of Jennie, who was sitting on the couch.
"Jennie, does this hurt?" Lisa asked softly, pointing at her wound. Jennie nodded, still crying, but Lisa's gentle voice helped calm her a little. "Jennie, I'm not mad at you, okay? I'm just worried about you. What if it wasn't just your foot that got cut by the broken vase?" Lisa said in a soft, calming tone, her face filled with concern.
Jennie had thought Lisa was angry because she broke the vase, but hearing Lisa express her worry made her tear up again—this time not because of the wound.
Lisa finished taking care of Jennie's wound and cleaned up the broken vase. Jennie was no longer crying, though her eyes were puffy from all the tears that came out. Lisa gently picked Jennie up in a bridal style and brought her to the kitchen so they could eat dinner together.
After a few minutes, they finished eating. Lisa gave Jennie a piggyback ride to their room, placed her gently on the bed, and tucked her in with a blanket. She then turned off the light, lay down beside Jennie, and pulled the blanket over herself. "Lisa, are you still awake?" Jennie asked in a soft voice.
"Yeah, I am," Lisa replied just as softly. "I'm cold," Jennie said, their faces close to each other. "Then I'll get you a jacket," Lisa offered. "No, I want you to hug me," Jennie pouted, pleading with Lisa. "Okay, fine," Lisa said, giving in. Jennie smiled her gummy smile as Lisa moved closer and hugged her, and Jennie hugged her back.
They fell asleep wrapped in each other's warm embrace.
Author's POV:
In that moment, the broken vase was forgotten, along with their problems. Lisa was far more concerned about Jennie than the vase her mother had gifted her last Christmas.
