I stared across the small graveyard, counting the grave stones like I usually did when I visited. It was silent and calm outside, and the half moon didn't do much to light the area. That was okay though. I knew the grounds like the back of my hand.

Before anyone believed me to be weird, it's important to note that my first raising in this place was at the little graveyard. I lost most of my blood, since the person I was supposed to raise had been dead for years - and yes, you can raise a skeleton. They just don't have the ability to speak.

But I realized years later that people came up to the graveyard and buried their animals. Behind all of the grave stones, there was a giant tree. Behind that tree was where people lined up their animals in small burial plots and buried them.

I wasn't sure if it was legal to do that, since the land was privately owned, but the owner didn't seem to mind. If they did, they didn't say anything about it.

I walked back behind the tree, feeling, rather than seeing, Kieran follow behind me. He was silent, not making a noise. If I didn't sense him there with me, I would have checked to see if he left. I needed to learn how to move that quietly, if not simply for snooping purposes.

I knelt down next to one of the plots that had fresh dirt and ran my hand over it. Nerves began curling in my stomach because what if I had completely lost my powers? What if, the moment I died, I lost everything? Zombies were real, though they had to be controlled with a steady blood supply from a necromancer. There wasn't someone giving me blood to keep me going.

I blew out a slow breath and sliced the palm of my hand before pushing it into the ground.

The moment I said respirare, the ground pulsed so hard that it threw me back. My hand came up from the ground, but there was a long strand of blood pouring from my palm to the dirt pile.

Kieran grabbed the tree to steady himself as another pulse rocked the ground around us. His eyes met mine, and while outwardly he looked composed, I could tell he was slightly worried.

You and me both, I thought dryly.

The ground above every single grave exploded upwards, blinding me with dirt. I covered my eyes with my arm and turned away until the dirt stopped raining down.

"Nova." Kieran sounded anxious. "Nova, open your eyes."

I blinked dirt from my eyes and lowered my arm and froze. I never felt fear from my power until that moment.

The amount of blood it would have normally taken to raise that many bodies should have incapacitated me. Every single grave was open and every body - in every state of decomposition - stood beside the open grave. They were all facing me.

I had to hold back a shiver at the sight.

There was a half-decomposed tabby cat at my feet, staring at me with her head tilted. I could only stare back, unblinking, unable to breathe.

I still had my powers, that much was evidently clear. But I wasn't giving any one of the bodies surrounding me any blood, and yet they were staring at me, full of life. Even the freaking skeletons looked like they were waiting for me to tell them something.

Jason appeared and his head whipped down at me, his eyes wide. "What-"

"You," I said, forgetting all about the little dead cat by my feet.

He took a step back when I stood.

Kieran looked back and forth between me and the air around Jason, his expression growing increasingly nervous as he watched the whole ordeal. I'd tell him what was going on, but he'd figure it out soon enough.

I cast my hands out to my sides. "Requiesce in pace."

Every single body melted back into the ground, the dirt and grass forming back on top of their graves like every single one of them hadn't just been standing outside of them not moments before. The cat was last, letting out a hoarse meow before it disappeared into the ground.

"You fucking brought me to my own death," I said, holding myself back from attacking him. "And you just stood there while it happened and watched."

Jason's eyes moved over the silent graveyard, barely paying me any attention.

I stepped up to him and slammed my hand into his chest, making him stumble backwards. I'd be damned if he ignored me.

His eyes found me. "Nova, I didn't have a choice."

"No choice," I asked, astounded. "You always have a choice."

"They told me to bring you or Selene would be killed," he said. "I had to choose between you or Selene. I didn't know you. Why should I have given two shits if you died if it meant Selene would live?"

"I get you wanted to protect Selene." I knew if I had a heartbeat, it would be slamming in my chest. "But you brought me there and watched him kill me."

"They didn't tell me they were going to kill you!" He threw his hands out in anger. "They told me to bring you there. They wanted to see what the fuss was about, whatever the hell that meant. Something about two people watching over you. They said nothing about killing you."

What the fuss was about? There would have never been any "fuss" if it hadn't been for Beverly and what she said. And the more I thought about it, maybe she had been telling the truth. I told myself she was lying because she hated me, but the more shit that happened, the more I realized that maybe she truly was warning me.

"Now I realize," Jason said, eyeing Kieran with a look of distaste. "You had my alpha and Selene's master wrapped around your little finger. What? Are you fucking them both?"

I was so shocked that I couldn't even react. How did this turn into who I was having sex with? I went to get his body, because he played dumb and made me believe he had no idea that my father was a part of it. He did so well acting that I believed he had no idea who he was.

And now it was about my having sex with Kieran and Lucian?

Jason nodded. "Of course you are."

I blew out a breath and shook my head. "I got into this to help save you. Lucian came to me for help and I obliged. I genuinely wanted to help you, even when your pack did nothing but belittle me. Lucian and Kieran helped me, because I didn't know how to fight for myself. They stayed with me to protect me so I could be here to help find you, or pass along whatever words you may have if you ended up dying. But this entire time, I didn't want the latter to happen. I didn't want to see your spirit. I wanted to be useless this entire time because my being useful meant you died and Lucian lost someone important to him. But when you showed up, do you know what I thought? Maybe getting your body would help bring Lucian and you closure."

He chewed on his bottom lip and looked away. If I didn't know any better, I would have said he looked kind of embarrassed.

Good.

"But oh was I the fool for ever allowing myself to get swept up in a plan to save someone like you." I looked him up and down, curling my lip in disgust. "If I would have known what kind of man I was trying to save, I would have said no. Because who in their right mind would want to save the likes of you?"

He opened his mouth to respond, but I held up my hand before turning and walking away.

Kieran took one last look in Jason's general direction before following behind, careful not to step on any graves.

A/N: I just had two family members pass in a very short amount of time from each other. I'll try to continue to post on Friday's, but just in case I miss one, I'm dealing with that.

Thanks in advance for your understanding.
