Most of the pack wasn't even at the pack house yet and I could already feel the thrum of nerves and annoyance. They only knew they'd be meeting an outsider who would potentially be able to help us find Jason. Most of them didn't like outsiders. A lot of them didn't like vampires. I would say maybe her being a mix-breed could potentially help, but I genuinely didn't think they'd take well to a necromancer.

I sat on the floor of the meeting room, my head tilted back and my eyes closed. I could feel Lucian getting closer, and could feel his heightened heart rate that had nothing to do with the fact that he was running.

The first time he met her, he came back to the pack house and just stared off into space, a glass of whisky in his hands that I don't think he ever actually drank. Unlike the rest of the pack, I could feel his emotions. He seemed conflicted. Confused. And most of all, turned on.

He didn't speak of their first encounter, but one didn't have to be a rocket scientist to be able to figure out what happened. When he finally said she had agreed to help, I wasn't surprised. No, what surprised me was the little smile on his face when he said it.

He'd been so strung out since Jason's disappearance. He put on a good front for the pack, saying things were heading in the right direction. But he couldn't fool me, and he knew that.

I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling when I heard the front door click open. I raised my ears to listen.

They walked towards the end room at the opposite end of the pack house from where I sat - my room - and stopped.

"You're safe here," Lucian promised. "I swear on my life, and my pack, that you won't be harmed here."

And then I felt her.

My eyebrows drew together as her emotions flooded me, stronger than anyone else's in the pack. It covered all of their emotions until it was just her and her feelings of fleeting nervousness and exhaustion.

I tilted my head, listening as my door closed.

Her nerves spiked, and I could hear her closing my curtains.

I smiled slightly. I had the room specially made so that I could look out at the woods, but I could understand why it was she didn't want everything open. With so many wolves coming, I was sure they all wouldn't come by car. They'd likely run around the house and stop to look at her.

Smart move, even without her realizing it.

"What are you smiling about?"

I tilted my head and looked at Lucian, who sauntered into the meeting room, his hands in his pockets.

"She seems uncomfortable," I said, feeling as her emotions relaxed gradually.

He stopped, his eyes dropping to meet mine. I didn't look away, because I knew he was aware I'd never challenge him for his spot. We were too close for that. Also, I was sitting on the floor while he stood. He was in a position of power, regardless of the eye contact.

"You can feel her emotions," he asked.

I nodded. "It drowned out most everyone else's. I can still feel everyone, but I have to focus a little."

His eyebrows raised.

It was strange for me to feel other people's emotions so strongly who weren't in our pack. But I didn't question it. My wolf was content with her in the house, in my room.

"You're..." Lucian trailed off.

I stood, and only then did I look away, past him to the door. I knew what he was going to say.
