I pushed past dancing bodies, ignoring the groping hands that were either too hot or too cold against my skin. I just kept reminding myself that, once I got to the bar, I'd find a seat and ignore everyone. I had to be there for at least an hour before I could start asking questions, especially the route I was taking.

I sat down on the one empty seat at the bar and pretended to not absolutely hate being there. It took a lot of effort for me to look pleasant and approachable, and it usually gave me a headache after some time because I was thinking too hard about it.

A vampire bartender walked over to me and slid a small square napkin in front of me. "What can I get you?"

I eyed the menu behind her. "I'll just take a water with lemon for now."

She nodded and dispensed it in front of me. "I've never seen you here before."

"It's normally not my cup of tea, to be honest." I smiled and took the water. "I just agreed to meet someone here when I wasn't thinking straight."

She grinned, flashing fangs. "It's not my cup of tea either, sweetie. Pays the bills though."

I smiled politely at her until she turned to ask someone else if they wanted a refill on something that looked a lot like blood. I couldn't judge, of course. Although, most full vampires just drank blood because they thought it tasted good. I never understood the appeal.

I sipped my water, then turned to watch the dancers like I was waiting on someone to just magically appear. I knew what Jason looked like - courtesy of Lucian while I was driving. So I knew what to look for. Or I guess pretend to look for.

Over the next hour, I had a few people ask what I was doing alone, to which I answered with the same old answer. I was waiting on someone, but the longer it took for them to arrive, the more I believed I was being stood up. I showed a few people his picture, but other than a few off handed comments about wolves, I didn't get anything of interest.

I turned back around when the bartender came back to fill my water up.

"I think I got stood up," I said, laughing.

She smiled slightly. "Do you want something other than water? It's my treat."

"No." I shrugged. "I think I'm going to go soon, and I'm a lightweight."

I wasn't, but I didn't want to drink.

I pulled my phone out, looking at my texts. Of which I had none.

I sighed.

"Let me see this man you've been waiting an hour for." She slid the water back to me. "He must be hot as hell if a girl like you is waiting on him."

I didn't want to think too far into that.

I showed her the picture.

Her eyes squinted. "He's here all the time. I'm not sure why he's not tonight. But, hon...you're too good for the likes of him."

Because he was a werewolf? Or because he had sex with anything that was female?

I wondered if she knew what I was, or if she was just playing around. Either way, normal vampires didn't care for me because I wasn't fully like them. I was stuck in the middle, and was also a necromancer, which freaked people out. So I assumed she had no idea.

I hummed and slid the phone back into my purse. "Some would think differently."

She waved her hand dismissively. "Half vampire, full vampire, you're still one of us."

She knew.

How the hell did she know?

I didn't let the shock show on my face, but I felt it all the same. Unless a werewolf told her I smelled different - which was unlikely with the amount of bodies in the club - how the hell did she put two and two together.

I smiled like what she said didn't make my heart speed up.

She waved and turned to go help someone else, leaving me on the verge of sweating nervously. I knew the vampires in the city knew I existed, but how the hell did they point me out? I was one out of however many people that lived in that city. They couldn't feel my power as a necromancer. I knew how to hide that.

"I wouldn't think a place like this would suit you, Nova."

A chill danced up my spine, and I was glad I wasn't facing him, because I knew my face went paler than normal.

A hand appeared on the bar beside me, long pianist fingers gripping the wood as he slid into the suddenly vacant seat to my right.

Fuck.

I turned and locked eyes with Kieran. His light violet eyes glittered in amusement as he watched me take him in - from his bleach blonde hair, to his lean body and long legs.

Normally, I didn't find long hair to be exceptionally attractive on a man, but his just seemed to suit him. Like if he cut his hair, he wouldn't be Kieran.

When my eyes found his again, I saw he was smirking.

"I was about to leave." I turned away from him again.

"Why's that," he asked.

I tapped my fingers on my glass, hoping it didn't look like the nervous tick that it was. "I got stood up."

My phone buzzed in my bag, but I ignored it.

He hummed, leaning toward me. "Stooping so low as to meet up with a werewolf. Where have your priorities gone, Nova?"

I laughed. "My priorities are none of your concern. I'm not yours in any form of the word. Whether I want to meet up for a quick fuck with a werewolf or not, that's none of your business."

His smile grew wider. "I guess not, but how'd that go for you? Think he got cold feet and decided a mere half vampire couldn't do it for him?"

I slapped him across the face.

Hard.

And everyone around us turned - the werewolves smirking, and the vampires looking like they either wanted to kill me, or they feared for my life.

Kieran tilted his head. "Hit too close to home? Why don't you try a vampire instead?"

I put a twenty dollar bill on the bar, which would cover the two waters I drank and more, and slid off of the barstool.

"No," I answered, "I'd rather raise the dead and fuck that than to ever stoop so low as to fuck a full vampire."

He grinned, which was the exact opposite of what I wanted him to do. I wanted him to look shocked, at least. Not like his favorite toy was finally playing back.

"We'll see," he murmured as I turned and headed towards the doors.

I raised my hand and flipped him off as I walked away.

"We'll see" my ass.
