The AU where Seers are people who can see visions of your past life, but can never see their own.
~~~~~~~~~~
Lesson number one of being a Seer. Your visions are visions of someone's past life, which could hint to what will happen in the future. Always remember that the future is not set in stone, and that the past might not repeat itself.
"HICCUP!!" Jack screamed, reaching his hand out, trying to even touch his fingers-
But he was always, always just out of reach.
~
Jack bolted upright in bed, panting heavily. He swallowed, gulping air into his lungs, feeling like he had almost drowned- like that time back when he'd had his first vision.
Just a dream, he told himself, trying to will his heartbeat to slow down. Just a dream. But he knew.
Not a dream, a vision.
"Oh come on, Jack!"
Jack glanced back at the guy who was currently clutching onto his shoulder. "I told you before, Hic-"
"I know, I know, it's not something that you can control." Hiccup said. "All I'm asking for is that you tell me what you can see when it happens."
Jack shook his head, sighing. "Its someone else's past life, Hic. I shouldn't even be seeing it, and I definitely shouldn't be telling you about it so that you can go publish an article about it in the newspaper."
"You don't have to tell me whose life it is! I can just say it's some random person!"
Jack shook his head. "No, Hic. If you want someone to give you scoop on Seeing, go and ask someone else. There's no shortage of Seers around here."
Hiccup scoffed. "You and I both know there's only three Seers within a 35km radius. You, Merida, and Jamie Bennet."
"Then ask Merida."
"Already did."
"And?"
"You don't want to know what she said." He said. "The school halls don't need the extra sound pollution either."
"See? Told you, Hic. No one is going to help you with this article. Don't even think about going to Jamie and asking him. The kid's already traumatized." Jack frowned, thinking about Jamie. It was bad enough being born with weird visions that no one could explain, but having to see a vision of someone dying?
"Okay, fine." Hiccup groaned. "I guess I'll just have to come up with something else for the extra credit."
"Mmhmm." Jack hummed, unlocking his locker.
"But just out of curiosity, Jack." Hiccup said slowly. "Have you ever seen a vision of me?"
Jack hesitated, swallowing behind his locker door. "No." He said, slamming his locker shut to face Hic. "I have to get to World History class now."
"Yeah, I know." Hiccup said, closing his own locker. "I'll see you later."
"Yeah, see you." Jack mumbled, walking off.
~~~~~
"Well, you certainly look cheerful." Merida drawled from her seat as Jack walked into the near empty classroom- World History wasn't exactly the most popular class, the only reason why they were here was because it was mandatory for Seers to take the subject- to help understand their visions better, or something.
Jack shot a glare at the redhead.
"Gum?" Merida offered.
"Thanks." Jack said, taking the strip of gum from her. He sat down in the seat next to her.
"So, I'm assuming that Hiccup asked you to help with his article?" She asked.
"Yup." Jack said. "He told me you cursed him out like a sailor."
She laughed. "That, I did." She said. "So, what did you tell him?"
"I told him to give up on the article and find something else to write on." Jack said.
Merida nodded, popping her bubble gum. "Do you think he'll stop?" he asked.
"Knowing how stubborn Hiccup can be...doubt it." she said, absentmindedly doodling on her paper. "Have you Seen anything recently?" she mumbled.
"Nothing useful." he said, taking out his books. "You?"
"Nope." Merida said, popping the p. "Which is weird." she turned to look at him. "Do you think it's possible to grow out of it?"
Jack blinked. "Err..." he shrugged helplessly. "Do I look like I know these things?"
She shrugged, turning back to her paper. "It wouldn't be too bad if it happened, though." she mumbled, continuing to doodle aimlessly. Jack nodded silently, understanding what she meant. Being a Seer was no fun. Seeing visions that could come at any time- Seers weren't allowed to drive for that reason. Seers weren't allowed near weapons either. Also, if Seers even made it to their twenties- without going insane or anything- that alone was a feat. There was no such thing as 'oh a child won't see visions of blablabla...'- Jamie Bennet was living proof that a child Seer could see traumatizing visions.
~~~~~
Two days later, at a sleepover at Hic's house, Jack got a call from Merida's mom. Hic drove them there, and Jack sprinted upstairs to Merida's room before Elinor can even get a word out. "Meri?" he called, knocking the door.
The door flew open and Merida yanked him inside, before slamming the door shut behind him and locking it quickly. "Merida, what-" he froze when Merida whirled around.
Her face was streaked with tears.
He stared at her in shock. Merida never cried, never. "What-"
"I Saw, Jack." she choked on her sobs. "I Saw-"
"H-hey, Merida, it's okay, you didn't grow out of it-"
"NO!" she screamed. "That's not what's wrong!" she shot a glance back at the door, before grabbing Jack's shoulder. "I Saw Hiccup, Jack." she whispered in his ear. "I Saw him die."
Jack stared at her, not believing his ears. It couldn't be- not- not Hiccup. "You're absolutely sure it was Hiccup?" he whispered. "Absolutely 100% sure?"
"Yes." This couldn't be happening, Jack thought.
