[implied suicide mentioned - mericcup, eugunzel, bennefrost, elsanna]
she can't tell what's real and what's not anymore - reality, imagination, dreams, memories - they all seem to blur into one another, until she can't tell one apart from the other. they just feel so real, even though she is aware, she knows, that there is no way that it could be real - it is physically impossible, at least by this reality - her reality's standards.
dragons don't exist, a voice at the back of her mind tells her, (well, not in your future (current?) world, they don't. ) but her hands still swipe up the bow strapped to her back (where - how - ) and without really knowing what she's doing (she's never held a bow in her life before (not in her current life, but she has, she has - )) she has it raised, an arrow nocked, string pulled taut.
(she remembers a man, large and loud, with hair as red and curly as her own - but he is not her father, not now. (what even is now?))
a brown haired boy calls her name (her name but it is not her name). she turns to meet his green eyes, green like a pickled toad - hiccup horrendous haddock iii.
(merida doesn't know him yet, but this is only their first meeting - merida dunbroch, the one from five years later from this point in time and space - that merida is weeping, and she can feel her grief even now - there is so much pain - )
she closes her eyes. when she opens them again, she is elsewhere, in another time, another reality, another person entirely - she is kneeling in front of her bathroom mirror, her reflection with her freshly cut brown hair stares back at her with dull green eyes (so much pain, there is so much sorrow - who is it this time?)
she sees the bloodied blade on the tiled floor, and then the trail of red from where she had pulled it out from. the blood on her hands has cooled, his body is cold, cold, too cold -
oh, flynn. or is it eugene, in this timeline? (what does it matter, he dies in either one anyway, and just like before, there is nothing that she can do to stop it from happening.)
it is eugene, she realises. because out of the corner of her eye, there lies a second body, staining the tiles red. (she is not rapunzel, not that kind and gentle girl who would never hurt a fly, the one who sobbed and cried a magical tear that saved her love's life -)
there is no magic in this world. she is not rapunzel. and she has no more tears to cry.
for the last time, she raises the blade -
the world disappears. and reappears.
he is seventeen, two weeks shy of eighteen, and he is drowning.
he is drowned, and he is reborn - an immortal with powers of ice and snow. with no memories of the boy before the pond, of the sister and mother who weep for him - brave, foolish boy. (lost, lonely boy who will never grow up to become a man.)
it is centuries before he remembers, centuries before he meets the boy who, despite all odds, believed. the first one who sees him (who really sees him) and jack frost is no longer alone and lost, a boy with no home (because jamie is home).
but jack frost is immortal, and jamie bennet is not.
immortality is a gift that comes at a terrible, terrible cost. jack hadn't understood it then, when north had whispered it, after one too many drinks. but standing over jamie, watching as the light in those once so bright eyes dim and flicker out, jack understands what north meant by immortality being a curse.
with jamie's last breath, jack frost disappears with the wind.
as it always does, as it must, the world changes, restarts, and begins anew. this time, she is anna arendelle, plain to her sister's perfection. the spare, the unwanted sister. she had been so lonely, so alone.
then hans had come along. he was handsome, he was charming, he was funny, he was perfect - and he wanted her, her, not elsa. with him, just for a while, she didn't feel so alone.
(oh anna, if only there was someone out there who loved you.)
(there is no kristoff in this world. no magic.)
she spends a total of three days curled up in bed, crying her eyes out, eating junk food, and watching sad love dramas on her laptop. by the middle of day 2, elsa has joined her under the covers, allowing her to hug and cuddle up to her as they laugh and cry over corny drama dialogue, and have some long overdue conversations with each other.
hans may have broken her heart, but her heart will heal. she has her sister by her side, back where she belongs, and although they still have a couple issues to work through together, anna's future has never felt so bright.
