Mericcup week 2016 part 3

Merida was usually one for sleeping in, especially while on assignments, since you never really knew when your next proper rest might be. This line of work didn't exactly come with a strict 9 to 5 schedule.

But when she heard what sounded awfully like a woman's laugh outside her room, she suddenly found herself wide awake. "I swear to god, if Flynn decided to bring back another girl..." She grumbled under her breath, rolling out of bed.

She walked towards the kitchen, where the woman's voice was coming from. It smelled like someone was cooking-

"You know, Hiccup, I never knew that you could cook."

Merida froze in the hallway. Hiccup? It wasn't another one of Flynn's girlfriends? She walked over, looking inside the room.

A blonde woman was leaning against the kitchen counter, watching as Hiccup cooked something at the stove. She was attractive, even while wearing casual clothes, with long sleek blonde hair tied in a braid and pale blue eyes. Merida had never seen this woman before.

Just as she was contemplating her next step, the woman glanced over, locking gazes with her. "Oh." She said, blinking in surprise at Merida.

"Hi," Merida said, smiling awkwardly. "I didn't know that Hiccup had invited a guest over..?" She trailed off, glancing at Hiccup.

Hiccup had turned to stare at her, she could see him scrambling for a response, when the woman spoke up. "I didn't know your girlfriend was here." She remarked.

Hiccup stuttered, face visibly coloring in embarrassment as the woman smirked at him. "I'm Astrid," she said, getting up. She shook hands with Merida. "Nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too...? Um, actually, Hiccup and I, we're not dating." Merida said.

Astrid laughed. "Don't worry, Hiccup, I won't tell your father." She said, glancing at him knowingly. "By the way, you might wanna check on those sausages..." She said, glancing at the pan.

Hiccup cursed, quickly removing the pan from the stove, before the sausages burned. "Astrid is a, ah-" Hiccup hissed, tossing the still hot pan into the sink. "-a friend from my hometown. Here." He said, placing the plate of sausages on the table. "I wasn't expecting you to be up so early." He commented.

"He was going to cook some pancakes too." Astrid grinned. "You had better eat those before they get cold." She said, gesturing to the sausages.

Merida blinked. "They're for me?" She asked dumbly.

"Yeah," Hiccup said, starting to make pancake batter. "Flynn said these were your favourite?" He asked.

Merida took a bite of the sausages. "Yeah." She mumbled. "Thanks." She glanced at Astrid. "Sorry, but um, why are you here?" She asked.

"Hiccup's dad sent me to check up on him, since I'm going to Burgess for work after this." Astrid explained. "I'll be sure to tell the old man that he has nothing to worry about." She said, glancing at Hiccup.

"Please do that." Hiccup muttered, flipping pancakes. "Old man keeps telling me to get out and start working, then once I start taking his advice he suddenly wants me sleeping under his roof again."

"Parents," Astrid sighed. "But then again, you were the kid who somehow managed to blow up your garage."

"I was a child." Hiccup protested. "Accidents happen at that age."

"Yeah, accidents." She snorted. "The most accident prone kid on the street." She sighed, shaking her head. "And somehow he ends up being the most successful mercenary out of all of us." Merida accidentally inhaled her mouthful of sausage, sending her into a choking fit.
