"Hey, so, movies tonight?" Hiccup asked as Merida closed her locker.
When did it start, Merida wondered, glancing at the tall brown haired guy. Maybe it was after puberty kicked in, after his growth spurt. Or maybe it was how his voice had become deeper almost overnight. Or maybe it was how his shoulders had grown wider, and how he had gotten much more buff with all that working out at the gym with the other guys.
"I'll let you pick the movie." He offered.
It could be his stupid smile, the one he would make when he was embarrassed. Or maybe it was how he always looked at her like she was something precious, something special to treasure. The way he made her feel like there were butterflies in her stomach. Her, Merida! With butterflies in her stomach! She almost laughed at the memory of her two years ago, when Hiccup had been nervous and shaking like a leaf, worrying daily about 'this girl', and he'd just told him to man up and 'digest the butteflies'.
And here she was, with butterflies in her stomach. She couldn't remember when it had started, or maybe it had just always been there...and she just hadn't noticed it until it was too late. When he stopped looking at her, and had turned around to someone else...
"Yeah, Mer, don't ditch us again." Astrid said playfully, coming to stand next to her.
She shook her head, fixing a grin on her face. "Nah, I'd hate to be the third wheel with you and Astrid." she said. Astrid snorted from beside her, and he laughed. She didn't miss the look in his eyes when he looked at her-
Like she was something precious, much more precious than anyone else in the world.
The way that he used to look at her.

I'm in the mood to write sad one sided Meri. Also, go and listen to Park Jimin's Hopeless Love. She's amazing.
