Wakas (Part 1 of 3)

"Ma, I said I don't want to go to church. Please, stop imposing your religious beliefs on me," I covered my head using my pillow as I rolled on the other side of the bed.

"Alcaeus! All your cousins will be there!" I heard Mama shouted as she grabbed the blanket out of me. "My god, Alcaeus! Don't be so stubborn!"

"But I don't want to!"

"Didn't you hear me? I said all your cousins will be there!"

"So?" I hissed. "I don't care, Mama. I want to sleep."

"I will call your father!"

She stormed out of my room. I knew I pissed her off enough to call my father. Knowing my father? He does not hesitate to whoop my ass. I didn't want to go to this boring mass but I also didn't want a whooping in my ass. The moment my father entered my room, I stood firmly in my tuxedo as I flashed a smile on him.

But my head is aching so bad because I still want to sleep!

"I thought he doesn't want to go?" Father echoed to Mother. "He's here, Frances. Wearing his full attire."

"What?!" Mom bellowed. "That kid!"

"I told Mom I just need a minute but she completely decides that I should not go," I lied as I stared at Father. "I think Mom is right that I should not go."

"No, son. We have to be there. It's Fiesta and people are expecting us. I thought you love Fiesta here in Dedalo?"

I shrugged.

"It's not so bad."

"The Unating family will host this year. Don't you want to experience something new?"

I know my Father is trying to pacify me so that I'll come but little did he know that at the mention of the Unating family, I became much more eager to cancel today's agenda. I hate their first born! Fuck that kid! All cousins of mine hate him!

"I'm not really interested, Dad..." I trailed off.

Dad sighed. I know he's having a hard time convincing me.

"Alright. I'll go."

I saw how his eyes shone.

"But I want you and Mom to back off. I'm not a kid anymore and I am thirteen years old. I want to wander the whole Fiesta alone with my cousins."

Dad and I made a deal. Mother was glaring at me the whole time as she mumbled things I clearly didn't hear. We used the car even when the venue is just a walk away from our house. Of course! I was the one who initiated that because I've seen how solid the sun is. I don't want to smell.

When we got to the church, I saw my cousins fast since they are not that hard to be seen. They stand out in the crowd. Why? Because they were laughing at Marcus' attire. I can hear Eugene's mirth outside.

"Alcaeus!" Alui shouted in excitement upon seeing me. "Dude! You grew 1 cm!"

I hit his chest.

"Fuck off, dude!"

"Hey! Language! Nasa church tayo!"

I looked at Marcus after he said that. I can't believe that a cousin of mine will pursue being an Altar boy. Mother kept on urging me when Tita Sally announced to the whole family what path Marcus has chosen. I'm glad that Mom was over the idea of it because I seriously cannot stand it. Me? Altar boy? I'd eat all the holy hostia.

"Altar Boy natin 'yan!" Pangaasar ni Alui. "Nakita ko nga bag niyan punong-puno ng hostia!"

"Dadasalan niya kasi 'yon sa bahay nila," ani ni Eugene. "Tignan mo mamaya, bubulong-bulong na 'yan."
