The librarian, Ms. Rose was enjoying her coffee when three out of breath teenagers arrived to the front desk. "This is a library...not a running track" she scolded them.
She was never the sporty type and preferred to be lost in a good book.
"Where is the New York Public Library book? I believe it was checked out a few minutes ago" said Janet Mills. Rose raised her eye brow and checked her records on the computer. "Well, the only copy was taken by Mrs. Turninghum-" the librarian was left mid-sentence as the girls ran out of the room.
Annie's sharp eye caught sight of the Mrs. Turninghum near a newspaper shop outside.
Mrs. Dora Turninghum was humming to herself when the three girls ran up to her. "Well hello dears. How may I help you?" she asked cheerfully. "Game's over Lady! We know you're a spy for Lady A" said Jessie, giving the 60-year-old woman a dirty look. "Excuse me?" asked Dora. "You took out the 'New York Public Library book right now" Annie accused. "Yes, I did" said Mrs. Turninghum confidently. "You admit it?" asked Janet surprised. "I admit that took that book for my niece," said Dora. "So your niece is the spy?" asked Jessie, confused. "What spy?" asked Dora. "Can you show us the book?" asked Annie. The woman looked suspiciously at them and gave them the book. "The dog-eared page is gone....and so is the note!" said Janet in a disappointed voice.
"Listen here young missies, I have no idea why you plan to ambush me like this but I will take that and leave thank you very much" Mrs. Turninghum snatched the book and mumbled about 'teenagers causing a ruckus' as she left. "She wasn't lying...she had no idea," said Jessie. "Don't you remember the note?" suggested Annie half-heartedly. Janet shook her head but remembered the photo. Praying to God that it was clear, she checked the gallery. There was silence before she pumped her fists in victory. Jessie and Annie hugged her tightly as Janet looked surprised. It was as if those mean come backs and comments never happened.
They read the text. "It's written in a very strange words...is it code?" asked Jessie. "You don't say Sherlock...I think it's another language" replied Annie. "We'll figure it out," said Janet. She felt a lot more confident now that they had a clue. "We better decode it quickly then" Jessie muttered. The girls decided to decode the text during lunch at school the next week other than going back to the library. They had a sneaky suspicion that they were no longer welcome there.
