Janet muttered a silent prayer as she picked the lock on her mother's office. Click. The door opened and Janet looked around the room. She instantly spotted the bag that her mother always carried on the main desk. She hesitated.
This is not right. She's your mom.
Well, the evidence points to her. Plus, breaking into the mayor's and your mom's office, you can't sugarcoat that.
It's still not right. Noah was right, we're breaking laws doing all of this. This would have been easier if we worked with the police.
How do you think the Famous Five, the Secret Seven got their jobs? Now be a woman and look into the stupid bag. The suspense is killing me.
You know, for being my conscience, you really are annoying.
Janet slid her hand inside the bag, still having doubts about her half-baked plan. Her hand touched the hard cover book and she quickly flipped through the pages. It was filled with all the newest additions of 'off-script', including photographs. Written in the margins was her mother's handwriting, saying all the dates and details. Janet didn't even realise that she was close to crying. How could her sweet mother be the most cunning person in the town?
"What's that?" asked three-year-old Janet curiously. "It's a chocolate with the shape of a heart" replied Eliza Mills, eating a heart shaped chocolate from Hailey's that she received for Valentine's Day. "What's a hwart?" Janet asked, mispronouncing 'heart'. "It's an organ inside us". Janet panicked.
She had heard her father say that her grandmother had heart problems. Mr. Mills had indicated his chest at that time and when she questioned it (she was very curious) her father had replied that it was inside the human body.
"Why are you eating hearts?" she cried. Eliza stared at her daughter and picked her up. "It's not an actual heart sweetie" she replied, combing Janet's hair with her hands. She gave the chocolate to Janet and she suspiciously stared at it before taking the smallest bite she could. She giggled at the taste.
Janet put the book back and wiped her tears. She heard a creak come from behind one of the cupboards. She slowly made her way towards the cupboard and grabbed one giant book with a hard leather cover. She stayed silent as possible as she looked behind the cupboard and gave a gasp. A man quickly scrambled out and held his hands in the air. Janet held the book tightly in her chest. "What on earth are you doing in the mayor's office?" she asked. "I don't mean any harm. I was just hoping to find a clue. I was helping a friend," said the man. Janet didn't recognize him.
"Who are you?" she asked suspiciously. The man didn't answer. Janet raised the giant book a little higher and pulled out her phone. The man stared nervously at the book and looked at her with pleading eyes. She repeated her question a little more forcefully. His answer left the young girl speechless.
