Janet Mills took a deep breath.
You're not 15 anymore, you can make civil talk, she told herself.
But as her mother stepped back into the house that she hasn't been in for six years, Janet felt like the same girl she had been years ago.
Eliza took off her coat and stared around the house. She walked around, observing new photos and the change of the couch.
Janet closed the door and stared at her mother.
Lady A, the nasty voice inside her head said.
It felt strange. Her mother walked around, acting as if nothing happened. Janet never truly forgave the heist and tricks her mother had pulled off in Brooks.
"Are you still friends with that Brooks gang?", her mother asked suddenly.
"Yes," she answered, defiantly.
"Oh"
Mr. Mills was on a business trip, and couldn't return to support and comfort his daughter. They made a promise.
If Janet wasn't comfortable, she would send her dad a text.
Daisy
Her father used to read her a story about a girl called Daisy, who needed help from her father to save their village from terror monkeys. In this case, Janet would ask for help from her father if she needed it.
Mr. Mills was now the permanent mayor of Brooks, seeing as his wife had to, unfortunately, step down to focus on her health.
They wouldn't be wishing her well if they know what happened, Janet told herself.
"Can I see her?"
The question threw Janet off course.
Eliza had her back turned, but Janet could hear the uncertainty in her mother's voice.
****
Janet waited as her mother laid a bouquet near Gina Turninghum's grave.
"I'm late. I never got the chance to say I'm sorry. We never got the chance to be friends. Maybe I can try, in another life" Eliza muttered. She suddenly turned to her daughter.
"Janet darling, never let anger drive you. Look what happened to me. If the people knew the truth, I would be in pieces" Eliza said. She wasn't crying, but Janet could hear the sadness in her confession.
"I just wanted people to feel the pain that they made me feel. The loneliness. The solitude. It breaks you. Being alone breaks you. It breaks your heart, Jannie; it breaks your mind and soul. It turns you into something you're not"
They stared at Gina's grave for a few more hours, processing everything that had happened.
That was the last time Eliza Mills spoke to anyone.
