The police couldn't believe the scandalous story, but Noah's video was enough proof for them. "Who figured all of this out?" one asked. Josh, Ginerva, Luke and Mrs. Turninghum were at the police station, where Eliza was kept safely behind bars. "A group of very intelligent children" Josh smiled at his answer. "Who knew the mayor- we need to tell the family of course- but we'll keep it under wraps for the rest- good lord, I thought I knew her...in the government too-" the flustered police officer hurried to the phone.
The retirement of Lady A was a miracle to the town and the world. As Chris said, it was a relief. Annie however was upset. "Not only did I miss all the action...I didn't punch Lady A" she said gloomily. Eliza Mills was said to be on vacation after the stressful Lady A business, when she was actually spending her time in jail. Mr. Mills was shocked at the police call. Janet was upset with her mother as well, but was much happier now that the mystery was over. They both agreed that it was best for their secret to stay hidden. The town even threw a party. "I was close to finding out who Lady A was" remarked Mike Nolan. "Sure you were dad" Jessie said, grinning. "I wish I knew who it was though, I would've thanked them for getting rid of that miserable magazine" her father said and after a rather violent series of coughs, Jessie politely excused herself. The entire town was in high spirits.
The days turned into weeks and Brooks was safe and quiet once more. Until...
"PLEASE HELP ME!" Lily yelled. "What's the matter miss?" asked Noah, wishing his police costume was more comfortable. "It's that darn thief, he took it...he took it!" cried Lily hysterically. "He took what?" asked Noah. Lily continued to sob. "Ma'am...I can help...just tell me what the thief took" said Noah gently. Lily stopped her crocodile tears, but sniffled. "That thief...he took my most prized possession...he took-"
"Three teas...one with extra sugar...Black coffee...there was also a discount on biscuits so I got that too" Jessie's arms were full. Janet counted to ten (her new method of trying to control her anger) while Annie helped Jessie. "Did I miss anything?" asked Jessie, oblivious to the fact she had disrupted rehearsals. "Nothing" Noah grinned as he caught Lily's eyes and they both turned away to hide their laughter. "Yeah cousin...you missed nothing" Janet hugged Jessie, knowing she couldn't stay mad forever.
After the group helped themselves to tea and biscuits ("It's very British" Annie said in a terrible accent) and finished the rehearsals, Lily got a message from Josh.
There was a picture of Josh, Luke Ginerva and a little girl with a large smile on her face. Lily smiled as she read the text.
We're all safe in New York. Luke's still working in Broadway. I got a job in a small office. It's not much, but it'll do for now. Ginerva's thinking going to the New Zealand next week. Rosie's happy to be back. Luckily, the family that took care of her understood the situation (I didn't mention much of Lady A of course) and she's back after a lot of paperwork...I'm not going to bore you with the details.
We owe you guys a lot. Thanks, kid...because I was convinced I would never get to see Rosie again. Let us know when you guys visit us. No pressure of course.
Lily forwarded the message to 'Who is Lady A' group chat which was renamed to 'Mystery solved'.
Annie- I'm so happy for them
Jessie- Awwww
Janet- Cute
Daniel- J
Noah- adorable. They deserve it.
Lily smiled at their replies. She sent a message to Josh.
Good to know you're alright. Rosie looks adorable. We wish you all well. Thanks for your help. We'll try and visit :)
She put her phone inside her bag and rested her hands in her pockets. The wind blew in her hair. So, this is what those movies meant, she thought. She felt free and relieved. This was how it felt to solve an actual mystery, she thought.
She felt herself go back to normal, which calmed her frantic parents.
She felt relieved. She was no longer in a cage of confusion and doubt. She was a free bird, and she realized that she was lucky. So many people took so many things for granted, but she decided not to make that mistake. She decided to take full advantage of her time, because it was short.
One day...one day, she would look back and smile at her past. All the mystery and suspense, she would need it in the future, she decided. She could use for her Creative Writing English project and maybe something more than improve her grades.
After all, it felt rather good to feel triumphant after discovering who was Lady A.
