She tightened her hands further when the man took steps towards them only for Rohan to block his way.
"What are you doing here?" Rohan asked and his voice was ruthless
She takes a few steps back when his mother places a hand on her shoulder with a sad smile.
"Can you please take the child away from this?" His mother requested and she jolts her senses as she runs to whatever room she finds first, closing it behind her
She place Sophia on the bed who didn't even look in shock as she is in the moment.
She places her hand on her cheeks, "Are you ok, baby?"
Sophia looks at her blankly almost at the loss of emotions. She found herself. She found her old self looking in those innocent eyes of Sophia.
"Sophia". She said gulping her tears as she holds her tiny hands, "You know your father is not the right man?" Sophia didn't say anything, "What he is doing is not the right thing". She places her hand on Sophia's cheeks, "And you can cry about it. No one will blame you. It isn't your fault, baby. What adults and others do is never your fault".
Sophia's lips tremble and she felt her heart-piercing, "It's not your fault. You did nothing wrong. You are on the right side and you don't deserve this pain".
That's when Sophia breaks. Three years old who was thrown in the corner and asked to not cry, feel and blamed for something out of her control. That's when a three years old realise that she was just a child who should cry and live. Not bear the consequences of others sins.
She gathers Sophia in her arms letting her cry as much as the child wants. She didn't want to stop her or tell her it's ok because it wasn't. She shouldn't have been through this pain. She shouldn't have to be ok. So, she cried her own pain and even more for the child's pain who was in her hands.
Because once she wanted to hear someone say it wasn't her fault and she doesn't have to bury her pain. That she can shout at her criminal and punish him as she please.
They (Rohan and his mother) watches them cry as they close the door behind them. He holds his mother crying figure trying to calm her down. He has seen his family break in a matter of three years. A good happy family turns to ashes because one person decided he will not face his pain and instead drown in it.
She holds Sophia sleeping body in her arms as she sits on the couch. Her phone vibrated for two hours now and the calls of her mother's fell deaf on her ears. For once, she didn't want to simply follow. She wants to stay for Sophia to assure her that even when she breaks through that nightmare, she is fine. She is still ok. That nothing will go back to how it was.
"Her mother died in childbirth". He spoke as he watches Sophia whimper ever so slightly in her sleep, "Sophia didn't even get to know her mother. My younger brother got married before me. He was in love with his wife. So, we decided to marry him". He sighs, "We were all happy when we heard about Sophia. Everyone told us that a girl shouldn't be first but we never cared. The day she was born we heard two different cries. One was of happiness from Sophia to be alive and ok. And the second was from her father's heartbreak of losing his wife". He wipes his tears, "We thought he needed time when he stayed out at night. We let him do whatever he wanted. It was when Sophia turned one and she went to his room that he curse at her and pushed her off him resulting in a head injury".
She gasps, as she stroke her head, imagining how it must be for her tiny heart to understand and take in that pain. But she understands.
"That day I understood that he was gone. My little brother mentally killed himself with his wife. He drank all night and had a hangover all day. He apologized for pushing Sophia making excuses about how he wasn't in his senses". He brush his hair away frustrated, "But the moment I stepped in this little girl room with a doctor trying to speak to her and she didn't even cry when they touch her injuries. That look in her eyes and the way she was, I knew we failed her. We all failed Sophia".
