Pathetic Parody

I still can't believe that it's over,
And I still can't believe that we happened at all.
Perhaps it would be easier to pretend it was just a dream,
A dream that I would inevitably have to eventually wake from,
Just like the dreams of you & I that I wake from every morning with a sigh,
With tears in my eyes,
Tears that spark lies, like "I'm fine."
My own feelings make a mockery of me.
I try to bury them alive in neat little graves,
But they always start ringing the bell,
Like zombies from hell.
You tell me to find someone who looks at me the way you once did,
And I still remember when you said no one else could ever want or need me as much as you.
But now we've agreed to never admit to each other that it happened at all.
I have to put on an act in front of you, too.
You keep secrets so well, much better than you keep vows.
You used to be anesthetic, then you were a euphoriant, & now, you cause the pain you once blocked in my brain.
The spell you put on me is broken, & I can't find the one that would undo your transformation.
I still can't believe that I was so careless as to let you hold my heart in your hands,
As to give in to your fickle demands,
As to fall for you & all the things that you said,
To let you get in my heart, to my head.
And it's far too late...
