"Serena!" My brother calls from the living room. "I need to see you."
"Just a second!" I respond, and before heading downstairs, I grab my phone. It's an older phone, but it's still an early enough model where it's still able to do just about anything. I race down the wooden-textured stairs, trying not to slip. "What's up?" I look at my twin brother from the bottom step.
"I think I just found my soulmate... She's an online friend of mine and every time I start talking to her I see more and more color."
My eyes open wide at him, and I smile, walking toward him. "That's awesome, Spencer. I think all you need to do is to meet up with her and your world will be 100% colorful."
He chuckles, rubbing his hand through his light-colored (at least to me) hair. "I really think that would push it, huh?"
"Why don't you ask her if the same happens to her?""Oh! Good idea, Rina," he says, calling me by my childhood nickname. "Let me do that right now." Spencer looks down at his phone, his fingers wildly moving across the small keyboard.
I sigh and sit next to him on the couch. "I haven't found mine yet."
"I'm sure you will. I mean, Isla and I met just last year. I didn't really notice the color until now."
"But... What if I don't? What if my soulmate's dead? You know that happens to a good 75% of us."
"I doubt he's dead, Serena."
"You don't know that!" Spencer shakes his head at me.
I try to change the subject. "So, where does Isla live?"
He thinks for a moment before answering, "Wales."
"That's... actually quite far. Do you think you'll ever be able to see each other?"
"I think so." He nods. "If we're truly soulmates, it'll definitely happen."
I smile at him. "Has she responded yet?"
Ping.
"There she is." Spencer smiles, but I don't know if it's back at me or directed toward Isla. I guess it doesn't matter. I peek over his shoulder to see what Isla had to say.
He reads her message out loud. "You know, Spence, now that I think about it and you say that, I think I've started to see some color too. It's still pretty dull, but I'm going to try and convince my family to let me see you."
"Aww... Look at you two." I tease. "I can't wait to see Isla. Do you know what she looks like? Sounds like?"
"I only know what she looks like based on her profile photo. We have called a couple of times, but she has a very strong accent.""Well, duh. She's from Wales, which is a country in the UK, Spencer." He rolls his eyes at me. "Yeah, I totally knew that."
The front door opens and in walks our mom, Kate. "'Ey, mom." Spencer says as she walks in.
"Good evening, Spencer." She responds as she puts her bags on the floor in the foyer.
"Guess what?" He says, excited to share the news.
"What?" She looks at him.
"So... You know that girl I've been talking to online? Isla? The one from Wales?"
"I think so, yeah."
What? He told mom about Isla before me? Wow, way to share the love, Spencer."Well... I noticed something today."
"What's that?" She tilts her head at him, but looks back at her bags on the floor, looking for her notebook and computer."I've started seeing more color the more I talk to her."
I swear, if mom had had anything in her hands at that moment, she would've dropped them both to the floor with the way her face moved and became more shocked. "You've found your soulmate!" She yells."Yes, yes, I assume I have." Spencer covers his face with his hands. "I just need to see her in real life to... well, you know, see in color completely."
"Does Isla see the same with you?"
"Yes. Serena asked me about that, too. So I asked her. She said that she didn't really notice until I said something." He laughs."That's amazing, Spencer." She smiles.
I could sense she wanted to say "Wait until your father hears about this!", but... She lost her husband, our father, about two years ago. It's been very hard for all of us without him, considering my mom's world is in black and white again. It is possible, though, to 'make' a new soulmate. If you meet someone and you two create a close bond, they could become your new soulmate. It's just really hard to do.
So if my soulmate is truly "dead", and he very well could be, I guess I'll have to try to do that.
