The four of us teenagers hung around most of the rest of the day, talking about our lives, our soulmates, all that. My mom had to go back to working on her project.
It was fun, though, especially since my soulmate was in the same room. I felt bad for Evynne and Spencer, who couldn't see theirs as often as I get to see mine. Especially Spencer. It came to be a bit later, almost dark, and Evynne had to go back home.
"How much later can you stay, Lance?" I ask.
"My family don't care too much, as long as they know where I am, so..."
"So you could technically stay as long as you wanted?"
"To an extent, yeah, I guess so."
"I was just wondering, because... I'd like to get out of the house before it gets too late. I'd love to be able to go out to that same fountain you took me to when we became 'official' soulmates... and perform that second song I taught you. Together." I smile nervously. Lance gets close to me, planting a gentle kiss on my cheek... and that's the first time he's done that since we've been together. "I'd love to."
My smile gets less nervous and more genuine as I bring my gaze up to match his. "I figure it would be one last hoorah before... well, the actual holidays. And we get busy and not be able to see each other face-to-face for a while."
Lance nods, understanding my point. "We should probably get going before it gets too dark, then."
I nod. "Let's go." I walk to the door and grab my jacket.
"See you two later!" Mom calls from her office. Lance opens the door for me as I slip my jacket on, and I walk out. He follows.
"We'll be doing this a capella," I say, taking his hand, "so I hope you remember the other song pretty well."
"Well, you're starting it, so I shouldn't have a problem."
"True." I laugh.
We continue to walk, talking about our plans for the rest of this year. It doesn't take very long to approach the little park we go to, and then over to the fountain surrounded by benches in the less-busy section of it. We go over there and sit down, finishing up the last of our conversation. We're alone out here.
"I don't ever think I've seen this place so... empty."
"I don't think I have either," he responds, "usually there's only one or two people left by this point. But we are the only people here."
"That's good, then. No audience."
He nods. "Yeah."
I smile at him. "Let's get this song over with."
Another nod. "Let's go."
