"Doc Bermudez, okay ka lang?" one of the nurses asked me, snapping me back to reverie.
"Sorry, what?" I asked.
"Okay lang po ba kayo? Nako, kain po muna kayo or magpahinga saglit. Kanina pa po kayo wala sa sarili eh," sabi pa ng nurse sakin.
I shook my head. "No, I'm fine, really. I'll just check the patients real quick."
Isang linggo na rin simula nung umamin sa akin si Doc Felasco at isang linggo na rin kami nagkakailangan sa isa't-isa. Kanina nga nang nagkaroon ng meeting sa department ay akmang tatabi sana siya sakin, kaso bigla naman sumingit si Sage at doon naupo sa dapat niyang uupuan. Pakiramdam ko nga ay nahalata niya ang kakaibang kilos nito.
I know that there's nothing to be embarrassed about. I mean, maybe I got used to the setup with the guys who only want my body and nothing more. After that emergency conference, lumabas na kaming lahat sa conference room saka ko naman naramdaman ang pag vibrate ng phone ko kaya napatakbo na rin ako dahil galing sa ER ang tawag.
When I came, the scene was chaotic because of the casualties that came in. The doctors were there to control the scene. Agad ko naman nilapitan ang pasyente na malapit sakin.
I checked the patient after the paramedic gave me the information about the patient and giving him a quick check before bringing the patient so we can check if there's much damage.
Two surgeries, one left. Lumabas ako para i-inform ang family ng pasyente na wala na ito sa peligro.
"Maraming salamat po, Doc," the patient's mother shook my hand as tears still running down her face. Nakasalubong ko yung isang nurse na kasama ko kanina sa operating room at agad ko siyang tinawag.
"Bring the patient to the operating room. Replace the resident I was working with. He's off the case. Find me another one," utos ko saka naman tumango ang nurse.
"I'll assist you."
Napalingon ako at nakita ko si Sage na kakalabas lang sa operating room. He's still wearing his scrub suit at hawak niya ang kanyang cap. Kinausap niya yung nurse at tumango naman ito. Who's having a fellow as an assistant, anyway?
Dumiretso na ako sa loob saka agad na naghugas ng kamay. I felt him beside me, doing the same thing.
"Hindi ka ba busy? Rounds or anything?" tanong ko.
"Basically, I'm free. I just finished my last surgery and my rounds starts at 3," sagot niya.
Napakunot ang noo ko at napalingon tuloy ako sa malaking orasan. It's almost lunch time na ah?
"Mag lunch ka na doon, anong oras na rin..." sabi ko sa kanya.
"Let's finish the surgery first," aniya.
"Pero kasi—"
"Addison, there's still a surgery that awaits for you." diretso niyang sabi.
Nanahimik na lang ako at pinigilan nang magsalita. We went inside the operating room as the nurses helped us wore the disposable surgical gowns and gloves.
