Staircase
"I'm still pursuing mechanical engineering right now. So, basically, ipagsasabay ko ang pagtulong sa company at pag-aaral," I answered his question when we were finally inside his Donahue Alcuesta.
His eyes remained attentively on me as I spoke. I leaned on the passenger seat of his car and pursed my lips, bahagyang pinamumulahan dahil sa klase ng atensyong binibigay niya.
I'm not uncomfortable though. What happened wasn't what I expected. They acted like nothing happened, lalo na si Tita Ada. But whatever it is, I should savor the peaceful days I feel that's about to come.
"When will you start going to school then?" namamaos niyang tanong at saglit na ibinagsak ang mga mata sa labi ko.
"By next week. But most of it are modular, may certain schedules lang kung kailan ako makikipag-meet sa mga prof."
He nodded and pondered for a bit bago iniangat muli ang tingin sa akin.
"Tell me if you need help, I can surely help you with your studies."
Just like the good old days, huh?
"What are you thinking about?" He stifled a smile when I got silent for a while.
"I'm thinking about our tutor sessions back then. I miss the spot where I always sit. Can we go there, please?"
But the pleading look on my face made him sigh in defeat.
"Hmm... I'll take you there."
I looked at him with an undeniable excitement.
"Kailan? Bukas ba? I'm very free!" I beamed.
He shook his head and chuckled.
"Tomorrow then. But let's get you home first, you need to rest."
I was busy watching outside the opened window of his car. Nakaka-miss ang karaniwang tanawin sa El Valencia. I miss the sight of the trees on the side of the road, I miss the fresh breeze, and the smell of the freshly-cut corn field. Everything about it, actually.
And before I could even get out of the car, tanaw ko na malapit sa gate sina Kuya Eisen at Kuya Ezra na tila naghihintay sa pagdating ko.
Will my Kuyas ask why I'm with Luci? It's a bit odd, after all.
There were no questions from them. Or so I thought...
"Luci, why are you with my cousin?" Wala namang tensyon sa boses ni Kuya Eisen nang nagtanong but he's freaking serious and it's so not him.
"He's my boyfriend," agap ko bago pa man makasagot si Luci.
