Chapter 16

The star swimmer sat down on a bench outside. A light snow began to fall on the cold December afternoon. She was in her special spot at the school that Tsuki introduced to her. A quiet little (and I mean tiny) courtyard with a single bench.

The entire patio was maybe six feet by five feet at best. There was only brick walls surrounding it with only one door leading back into the school.

She sprawled out on the cold metal bench. Just moments before, she had yelled at her best friend.

"Why am I like this?" She buried her hands in her face.

In that moment, seeing that random girl talking to Sumio caused her chest to tighten.

This happened a lot more nowadays. But the more she thought about why exactly she felt this way, the more she drew blank.

"Mou..." she sighed. "Maybe I should go apologize for snapping at him."

She watched as the snow continued to fall slowly. Her blue eyes followed certain snow flakes until they became part of the white sheet on the ground.

To be honest, she acted on instinct. She had always had a problem with allowing others to become close with people she cared about.

Take Chika for example. When Riko first moved in, Yōu and Chika were the epitome of best friends.

The two had been through it all as childhood friends.

So when Riko moved in next door to Chika, Yōu felt like the odd one out.

She felt like she was left out. That Chika was no longer her best friend. This of course was just through assumption, (which Yōu did often) just like today.

However it turned out that the three of them would later become extremely great friends.

But the problem of her jealousy remained. Which lead to today...

Of course, her jealousy episode was just because she was Sumio's best girl friend. Not anything more... right?

That's what she told herself at least. After all, this whole year she had been looking to set up Riko with Sumio. Priority number one was making sure they ended up with each other.

She sighed, there was no use in thinking anymore. The chilling air had cooled her off a little too much as she wiped her nose.

She pulled on the side door. It didn't open.

"Come on stupid door!" she pulled harder.

Nothing happened.

It was locked.

She felt like punching the brick walls. Of course it was locked. Any other time it could've been locked and now it chose to magically lock today, when she was out in the cold weather.

Yōu smiled weakly, this was probably the universe's way of getting back at her for getting angry at Sumio. Karma definitely comes around eventually.

At this rate, no one would find her until she froze. Well, maybe not that extreme, but it was definitely not going to be comfortable being out in the cold.

"Isn't global warming supposed to be a thing?" she blew warm air unto her hands. The bell rang signaling the start of class.

As the minutes rolled by the colder Yōu seemed to get. Just when she believed she would die there, the door opened.

There stood Sumio.

"Finally... found you." he said catching his breath. "You don't know how long I've looked-" the door behind him slowly was closing.

"Wait Sumio! The door!" she yelled.

"The what?"

It shut once again. Pulling as hard as he could, Sumio realized there was no way he could open the doors.

"You idiot!" she sighed. "Do you know how long I've been trapped here?!"

"It's gonna be a little longer!" Sumio replied banging on the door. "If you just never got stuck, we wouldn't be here right now!"

"I never asked you to come save me!"

"And yet here I am..."

Yōu continued to sit on the bench. "So... how'd you find me?"

"I thought that Tsuki would for some reason introduce you to my secret spot." he explained, "That and the fact you were literally no where else."

"Your secret spot?"

"Yep, I found a couple years ago running away from Tsuki."

"Well it seems ironic that you're stuck here."

"Hey you're forgetting the fact that I came looking for you in the first place."

"You were looking for me?"

"Yeah, you weren't in class so..." he shrugged.

Her face started to grow warm, he'd looked everywhere for her... "T-thanks. And I'm sorry for earlier."

"You're what now?" he stared at her in shock. "She actually apologized for something?"

"Say another word and I'll make sure it's your last!" she warned.

He smiled, "Right right. You know it's only gonna be a matter of time before we die."

"I'd rather jump from Tokyo Tower than die in the same area as you." she looked at the now shivering Sumio. She noticed something. "Hey idiot,"

"What's up?"

"Is that your phone?"

"Yeah, why?"

It took a total of five seconds for Yōu to start pummeling the dense Sumio. As he lay on the floor suffering from the assault from the sailor, she snatched his phone and dialed Tsuki.

"Hello?" the voice on the other side rang.

"We're stuck."

A few moments later the two were miraculously saved by Tsuki.

Explaining what exactly happened, Tsuki began to beat the living hell out of Sumio for being stupid.

And that's how everything ended. Happily.

Their friendship repaired, the two continued to be each other's best girl friend and best guy friend.

Balanced as everything should be.

And nothing would change between those two.

At least, that's what they promised themselves.

Here's another chapter! We're supposed to have like 2 straight snow days starting tomorrow so I'll look forward to it.

Be safe! Mask up! Don't be stupid!
