Chapter 41

"And so after a long lasting rom-com, cliché-induced relationship. Sumio Kobayashi and Yōu Watanbe lived happily ever after and had six children because they couldn't help themselves... that's just how in love they were.

Right?"

Tsuki Watanabe grinned as she watched the couple in front of her turn a shade of red she had never seen before.

Shintaro, Chika, and Riko all joined in laughter. They were all currently at Tsuki's place playing a board game.

As luck would have it, Yōu and Sumio managed to become husband and wife in the board game.

"Well shouldn't you be happy?" Chika teased.

"At least we know it's canon." Shintaro added.

"I'm sure your guys' kids are so cute!" Riko smiled.

"Shut up!" The pair shouted simultaneously. Then looked at each other for a moment. "This is your fault you know! How is it my fault?!"

"You're the one who got pregnant!" Sumio accused.

"You're the one who caused it!" Yōu shot back.

"It was obviously you who made it happen!"

"I would never be so irresponsible!"

"Okay okay can we stop talking about this before someone takes this out of context..." Tsuki said rolling her eyes.

"Isn't it so nice to see couples in love?" Shintaro's eyes beamed brightly.

"We're not a couple!" The two of them yelled back. But then a moment after, a wave a realization came upon them.

"Well... um... I guess..." Sumio scratched his head.

"W-we are a couple now huh?" Yōu murmured.

A depressed look crossed both of their faces.

"You guys don't look like you're happy you're in a relationship!" Chika scolded.

"That's because you know how annoying he gets right Chika?" Yōu clung unto her best friend's arm.

"I guess?" She responded.

"And you know how she always gets upset over the most random things I do right?" Sumio shook Tsuki aggressively.

"Mhm..." She nodded.

"So remind me again why you're a couple." Shintaro sweat dropped.

"T-they at least look cute right?" Riko offered.

They continued to play the game. Many turns passed with more events occurring in the "lives" of the characters they were playing as.

"Eight!" Yōu announced happily as she pushed her character down the board. She landed on an event space and read aloud the event card.

"Um, let's see here... You find your husband has been cheating on you and you file for a divorce. Roll the die, if the numbers add up to an even number you gain custody over your kids."

Yōu Watanabe finished reading with a smile before setting the card down. However the entire room sensed the heated daggers that she was sending Sumio's way.

"Hmm? You thought cheating was a good idea? Why don't I show you what happens if I ever catch you cheating?" She rolled her arm sleeves up.

"Huh." Sumio scoffed. "There was obviously a good reason for me to cheat!"

"EH?!?!" The four other people in the room gasped.

"It's clear as day." He chuckled softly. "As you can see... the only reason I would cheat on Yōu is if she were to cheat first!"

An even larger gasp erupted in the room.

"M-me?!" Yōu said her fists clenched. "You're blaming this on me?!"

"It's the only way..." Sumio shrugged. "You could call it, getting even?"

"That's not what the card says!" Yōu pointed aggressively at the card in her hand. "Not once does it mention me cheating!"

"But that's the only reason I can think of." He posed. "Because I would never cheat on you. You're perfect to me."

Everyone in the room clapped as Sumio smugly smiled at his girlfriend who had somehow turned redder than ever.

Yōu was at a loss of words. That's right. Yōu Watanabe... at a loss of words. Shocking.

She quickly managed to recuperate. "Y-yes yes... of course! I already knew you were loyal. A-and there's no way I would cheat either! B-because I only like you..."

The room erupted in cheer once again. As Yōu hid a grin.

Sumio of course turned red and avoided eye contact with the rest of the group.

"Are you saying that because of the game or do you really-"

"Is what I would say if I didn't know who you truly are!" She flicked his forehead. "Awww you should've seen the look on your face. You were super duper embarassed."

"It's not nice to play with your boyfriend's feelings!" Sumio said, tears filling his eyes.

"Yeah yeah! That's an absolute no-no!" Riko agreed taking his side.

"Exactly! He really thought you were being genuine!" Tsuki said as she patted him on the head.

"I'm on Yōu's side." Shintaro said giving her a high five.

"You should be an actor Yōu! You had my heart going ba-dump ba-dump too!" Chika smiled.

"I knew it wasn't a good idea to play this game!" Sumio wailed.

"Poor thing... let's get you some ice cream." Riko and Tsuki dragged him along like they were caring for their younger brother.

That night Yōu laid in bed awake. She couldn't get what she had said that day out of her mind.

Even though she played it off like it was a joke of some sort...

She really meant it.

The silver-haired girl reached for her phone and quickly scrolled through her contacts.

He picked up in two rings.

"What do you want..." he pouted obviously still annoyed from before.

"I just wanted to say, mainly cause I'm too embarassed to say it in front of everyone today, I actually meant all of that."

"Meant all of what?"

"Y-you know..." she began fiddling with her hair. "The part about me never being able to cheat because I only like you."

"Eh... and?"

"And what?" She stared blankly.

"Where's my apology?"

"I'm sorry for pretending it was a joke  and for probably, not very likely, definitely didn't but maybe, hurt your feelings."

There was a bit of pause on the other end.

"Nope. Not good enough." His voice echoed throughout her room.

"What?! I apologized!" She protested.

"Maybe if I got a kiss-"

"I'm hanging up!" She said, ending the call and throwing her covers over her head.

A few moments later her phone buzzed.

A text from Sumio.

"I love you." She read aloud.

She sighed, turned off her phone and went to bed.

But not before re-reading the message a few more times.
