"Alright students! Reminder that our midterms will be next week before winter break!" The class groaned as the teacher closed her book. "Mr. Kobayashi, please see me after class."
The bell rung and everyone packed their belongings. Sumio attempted to sneak out with the other students, however he was stopped by the prepared teacher.
She sat him at her desk. "These midterms that are happening will decide whether or not you can play basketball Sumio."
"What?!" He stood up, "They told me that as long I was getting okay grades I could play!"
"And I'm afraid you might not reach those 'okay grades.'" She sighed, "All semester long you've barely been passing."
"But that's still passing."
"Yes, but that's only because you've been doing homework. If we look at your test and quiz averages you're maintaining a sixty."
"And... what do I need to pass?" His eyes shined.
"A sixty."
"WOOOOOH!" a smug grin appearing on his face.
"-five."
"Huh?" He felt like he had been stabbed.
"A sixty five is what you need." She shook her head, "And I'm afraid if you don't get at least that number, you cannot play."
"This has to be some joke!" He said his smile faded. "Basketball is the most important thing to me."
"Then show how important it is by making your grades go up." She set her glasses down on the table, "You've got one week. I suggest you get someone to help you study. And I know just the person!"
The next day, Sumio got ready for his tutoring session. His teacher told him to wait for that person in the library.
The struggling student recalled the events from the conversation.
"You don't need someone smart, otherwise you won't listen to them. You need someone you can understand what they teach."
That made sense in a way. However, what adult would help him?
The door opened and someone stepped through. To his surprise, it was a fellow student.
A certain student...
"Great. Just great." Sumio sighed as he stared Yōu Watanabe who was sitting across from him.
"Hey, you shouldn't be complaining!" She reminded.
"They couldn't have sent me Riko or something?"
"She's too smart for you. I'm here to dumb the content down to your stupidity level."
"And they chose you?"
"It would appear that way wouldn't it?"
He sighed. This had to be a set up. "So... what should we do first?"
"We've got math first. Did you do your homework from yesterday?" She asked taking out her notebook.
"We had honework?"
"I had a feeling that's what you would say."
"So what exactly is the test gonna be over?" Sumio said stretching. "'Cause I need a good score or I can't play basketball."
"Right, cause we'd all be screwed if you can't play basketball." She rolled her eyes before leafing through his quizzes.
"Well..." he shrugged, "I mean if you want to date Shoji..."
