When they're born, everyone gets a tattoo of an activity on your wrist signaling your soulmate's favorite activity. Yours just so happens to be a microphone, giving you the information that your soulmate loves to sing. That's all one really knows their soulmate until you two meet. Once eyes are locked in a meaningful way, you two just know that you two are meant to be.
You're 24 years old and you have yet to meet your soulmate. All of your friends have met theirs while still in high school, so it's safe to say that you are feeling a bit left out. Since fully understanding the meaning of your tattoo, you got a job at a place where singing is apparent. Your local karaoke bar. It was the only place in town to sing.
One of your passions is playing the piano since you started lessons when you were just a little girl. If you had to place everything you owned into betting that your soulmate's tattoo was of a piano or music notes, you would. There is something so soothing about the piano that you just love. Your fingers glided over the keys as if they belonged there. Performing on stage was your second home which is why you were the pianist for the karaoke bar. Everyone who came to sing went through you which is why it was the perfect job to try and find your soulmate.
All your friends kept telling you to let it happen naturally, that it'll happen when it does, but you've been waiting for a very long time. All your friends are happy, starting families, buying new homes, all of which involve their soulmate. This job has to get you closer to finding yours.
After about a year of playing there, you didn't have any such luck. The place was crowded all the time, a ton of different people came and go as they pleased, a lot of them sang, but none of them was your soulmate. Each singer that sang on your stage had to meet you, but you never felt a connection to anyone until he came in.
He is tall, dirty blonde hair, freckles dust his cheeks, and the brightest green eyes you have ever seen in your life. He only started recently singing here, but you haven't said more than 5 words to him. He would come in, tell you which song he wanted, and then that was it. He seemed shy since he could never look at you in the eyes, but he was a damn good singer. His voice was so velvety smooth, you fell in love whenever he opened his mouth.
The registry on the piano is a list of all the singers that sing here for security reasons, but he never put his full name. J. A. You assumed they were his initials, but this man was a mystery otherwise. He seemed calm and collected, but after every show, he would wipe the sweat off his brow as if he was nervous as hell to be playing. He always wore a long-sleeved shirt, so you could never see the tattoo on his wrist. It was like this man wanted to remain anonymous to everyone but himself.
As soon as he walked into the door that first day, you felt a strange connection to him, as if there was something pulling you to him. Maybe you were just tired from being up on stage all the time, or maybe it was something more. If only you could get a glimpse at his tattoo, you would know if he was the one meant for you or not.
"I'd like to sing "Simple Man"," the mysterious man said once he walked on stage. Like all other times before, he refused to even look at you in the eyes. That song was meant for the guitar, but you would do it justice on the piano.
"You got it," you said before shuffling through your music sheets. There were all kinds of songs but all different kinds of artists on here. Whenever someone requested a new song you have never played before, you had to print out the sheets which is why you had so many. "Simple Man" was a popular song that many of the patrons of the bar enjoyed. After grabbing the right sheets, you positioned them above the piano keys before starting the song.
As soon as the man opened his mouth, you closed your eyes just to listen to him sing. This song had been played so many times, you didn't need to look at the music sheet to know which keys you needed to press. It was during this song that something clicked in your mind.
Whenever this man started to sing, you two would work in harmony to produce the best outcome. It never happened with any other singer you've come across, and it bugged you to know that there was something between you two that you were missing. Whether he likes it or not, you were going to go up to him at the end of the show to talk to him. Maybe find out his damn name or something.
When he sang the last note, people cheered for him as they sipped their drinks and chatted among themselves. The man took a water break, and that is when you made your move. Getting up, you followed him off stage before tapping him on the shoulder.
"You were really good tonight. That's one of my favorite songs to play," you complimented him.
"I have never heard that song on the piano, so you were equally as good," he said as he turned around. As soon as the two of you locked eyes, something sparkled between you two. His eyes shimmered in the dim lights, but you knew who this was.
"Jensen," you muttered the first name that popped into your head.
"Y/N," he said your name.
"Are you my...?" you asked the unfinished question as you pointed to your wrist.
"I think I might be," he grinned, rolling up his sleeve to show you the music notes on his wrist.
"I've been waiting for a very long time for you," you confessed.
"I'm right here."
This man was your soulmate.
